Truphone brings Skype, IM and Google Talk to iPhone and iPod touch

In a fairly comprehensive New Years blitz, Truphone has added a clutch of new features to it’s iPod app. Users of the free phone call application can now make calls and send IM over both Skype and Google Talk. MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger are limited to IM at the moment, with call functions to come in the next few weeks. Twitter is also integrated, and users can send and receive twits from within the Truphone app.

mDialog launch pre and post-roll ads for video content on iPhone

iPhone video delivery platform mDialog has announced it’s own advertising service. The mDialog Ad Delivery platform (mAD) was launched at the MacWorld Expo today. The platform lets content producers and advertisers deliver 5 - 10 second pre or post-roll ads and coupons on iPhone video content.

Juniper Research claims mobile coupon and barcode companies could benefit from the downturn

Some good news for mobile barcoders, from Juniper Research. It has released a report claiming that companies sending coupons via mobile barcodes will enjoy a massive surge in the coming lean years. According to the report, consumers looking for savings are far more likely to use targeted coupons sent direct to their phone.

First Clearwire WiMAX 4G network launched today in Portland

Clearwire officially rolled out it’s first WiMAX network in Portland today. Clearwire has been running broadband networks in other countries for a few years now, but the Portland launch marks it’s first launch of a 4G network. This follows it’s merging with Sprint’s WiMax network, Xohm. Since then, Clearwire has been erecting masts and preparing network areas in various US cities, including Washington, D.C. and Chicago, but Portland is the first to go live.

Deal between Al Jazeera and Sony Ericsson will bring headline news to mobiles

The Al Jazeera Network and Sony Ericsson have announced a deal to bring headline news straight to mobile phones in both English and Arabic. Al Jazeera RSS feed links are now built into the software of several Sony Ericsson devices in the Middle East and North Africa.

T-Mobile has launched a YouTube customer channel dedicated to answering user questions. Customers can post questions and receive video responses from experts or other consumers. T-Mobile also updates with useful short clips on how to better use the T-Mobile G1.

Social networker In Real Life pushes Presence-Based Social Networking

Amsterdam-based social networker In Real Life (IRL) claims that the future of social networking lies in presence, not location. Presence gives you a sense of where your friends are and allows you to add elements of location and connection to all of your social networking and social media. The company’s product, IRL Connect, is currently in private beta. IRL claim that it is starting to evolve presence-based social networking on the internet, and then migrate to mobile devices.
