MobileVoip fixes bug in its Symbian app @ GoMo’s request
Rating: Now the app runs on Nokias as well as Android & iOS
Here at GoMo News we’re always interested to here from app developers who dare to venture outside the bounds of Infamous Duo – Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. So we were delighted to hear from MobileVoip that the company had just signed a brand new, Symbian version of its app. Naturally, we decided to test out the Symbian app and therein lies a tale. After much messing around we discovered why we were getting this particular error message: – ‘Unable to install. Constrained by the certificate.’ We discovered the answer on Nokia’s developer forum here. The app had indeed been signed but it wasn’t the production version, it would only run on a developer’s handset. So we had to get back in touch with MobileVoip. We’re very happy to announce that we are now up and running with the Symbian version. Continue reading
Vodafone goes all Silicon Valley and sets up R&D Center – Xone
Rating: Get yourself down to Redwood City to test out your stuff
It seems that Vodafone has finally recognised that California is the hotbed of innovation not only in the IT world but in the global cellular sector, too. So the company has just launched an R&D facility – Xone – which is located in Redwood City – right in the heart of the Silicon Valley. According to Siavash Alamouti, director of Vodafone Group’s R&D, “Vodafone Xone offers Silicon Valley start-ups access to more than a third of a billion customers in more than 30 countries around the world. We’re excited about this opportunity to share our scale and global expertise with the brightest and best the valley has to offer.” The really important bit is that the leading mobile network operator has built a test network for 2G/3G/LTE which actually connects back to Vodafone’s European network. Clever stuff. Continue reading
Google ads track promotion site to Music Beta
Rating: Get tracks for free via Magnifier
As skilled news hounds, GoMo News managed to join Google’s Music Beta service even though we don’t actually live in the USA. Well, we’ve just spotted a message from Tim Quirk, head of music programming with Google. He’s promoting a new facility called Magnifier. At first we thought it was a new music search engine but it’s actually a blog. What Magnifier does is highlight new music which you can download free of charge. Each and every day, the team of music experts on Magnifier will add a new track. If you add it you can listen to it on your Android handset by downloading the Music Beta app. Today’s track was Kalimba by Mr Scruff. Continue reading

Rating: Echoecho answers the Where R U? question
A location based app works that not only anywhere in the world but also works across multiple platforms (Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, and Nokia) – echoecho – has acquired $750,000 in seed funding from Google Ventures and the UK-based venture firm PROfounders Capital. The app aims to answer one of the most common text messages we send and receive – namely, “Where are you?” The company claims that with echoecho, in just two clicks you can ask anyone in your address book that question. And, as soon as your friend/colleague/relative accepts the request, you can both see each other on a graphical map. echoecho CEO, Nick Bicanic, commented, “We’ve all been in a situation when we’re near our friends, but can’t actually find them.” Bicanic believes his company solves that problem and provides a whole host of extra features. PingMe aims to make texting thing of past
Rating: Isn’t a BBM killer coz Blackberry version not out yet
A new division of the mobile ad network, RadiumOne, has decided to launch the free messaging app – PingMe Messenger. It’s cross-platform app alright because there are iOS and Android versions. Other news sites may tell you there’s a RIM/BlackBerry version out, too. But it ain’t out yet because GoMo News actually checks these kind of things. So RIM won’t have to worry that its BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) service is in danger quite yet. And the London rioters can’t switch to it, either. But, hey, PingMe makes it simple for friends and family to share their location with each other. And – providing you’re on the right kind of data tariff, then the service is absolutely free. Rating: The LiveDock Android docking station impressed too

insurance2go builds on first mover advantage
Rating: Mobile handset insurance is the way to go
insurance2go claims to be the first company in the world to insure the mobile wallet. This specialist mobile phone insurance business was started by Duncan Spencer, former head of insurance at the Carphone Warehouse. Spencer claims his new venture is blossoming thanks to the boom in the sale of smartphones. “Recently we have seen that people are signing longer and longer contracts of 18 or 24 months so they can get a top-end handset at a reasonable price,” Spencer observed. “However, “This means that the period before they can upgrade is longer and if something happens to the handset within the contract period they are still obliged to pay the rental.” Spencer continued, “We’re seeing people switching to smartphones now and in the future there will be new technologies such as 4G that will drive demand. We also see expansion into Europe as a key part of our growth plans.” Continue reading
