shopping_shot 25% of UK retailers plan location-based investment

Rating: SoLoMo (social, location and mobile) is big news

Over three quarters (78 per cent) of respondents to a focused survey of top UK retail companies stated that strategic investment to enhance consumers’ multi-channel experience will drive retail sales this year. The research was carried out by Coleman Parkes who interviewed a total of 100 c-level and senior decision makers with UK retail organisations. Stibo Systems which commissioned the study believes that it clearly shows cross-channel retailing is a clear priority for UK retailers. Disappointingly only a quarter of retailers say they are actually planning on investing in location-based and geo-spatial technology in 2012. Indeed, around half (48 per cent) planning to enhance their mobile offering by the end of the year. Continue reading

Lumia_710_Vodafone Nokia produces a phone without Profiles in the Lumia

Rating: But we discover a shortcut to the handset’s Wi-fi settings

Some days you just fall on your feet and GoMo News experienced one of those days when we ran into a W7 Mango enthusiast by sheer accident. We’re currently right in the midst of testing a Nokia Lumia 710 loaned to us by the good folks at Vodafone. And our new-found friend confirmed that what we suspected is actually true. One of the best features of a Nokia phone historically has always been its support for ‘Profiles’. These enable a user to very swiftly put a handset in to ‘Silent’ or ‘Outdoor’ mode without having to go through a raft of different menus. You can’t do the same – presently – with the Lumia 710. If somebody creates ‘Profiles for Windows 7.5 Mango’ then GoMo News is prepared to better than people would be prepared to pay for it. Continue reading

BB10_UI Leaked images purport to show new BlackBerry 10 UI

Rating: At least RIM appears to be listening to what the market wants

The leak of images purporting to show what the UI for the next release of the BlackBerry OS (BB1o) will look like has caused a tremendous stir within the mobile world. The source of these rumours certainly appears to be Crackberry.com here and the evidence looks pretty convincing to us here at GoMo News. Whether this stuff is real or fake doesn’t matter one iota. What it does show is that those market watchers who are so keen to write off RIM/BlackBerry’s chances of survival have very definitely got it wrong. There’s still strong support for RIM products which ‘do what is says on the tin’ – as in provide very efficient mobile devices for checking your email – especially in a corporate environment.
