Rating: Get yer free iOS apps from FreeMyApps whilst they’re still hot
If you manage to fork out $800 for the new iPad next week, here’s a way to save a bit of money – get your apps for free. Yes, a site called FreeMyApps offers iOS the chance to obtain genuine prepaid apps for free – just by agreeing to download and try out other apps (again for free). These aren’t naff apps, either. The list includes GarbageBand, Fruit Ninja, Cut the Rope and, of course, Angry Birds. The site has been created by Fiksu using the same technology it invented to power Fiksu for Mobile Apps. The idea behind FreeMyApps is simple. Advertising is expensive and this site can drive traffic to your paid for apps. Simples. Continue reading
With mobile cloud storage the problem with BYOD is LLYOD
Rating: TeamDrive reckons it has the secure answer
The drawback to many cloud based synchronisation offerings is that for certain sectors – like financial – data has to be held securely. All business are scared of leaking confidential data or intellectual property when employees access files on the go. With version 3.0 of its offering, TeamDrive believes it has overcome all of the obstacles. TeamDrive doesn’t push customers into the public cloud. Instead, it can offer customers a free choice of private cloud, public cloud, TeamDrive cloud or enterprise server. On top of this, TeamDrive 3.0 adds secure clients for iOS and Android smart phones and tablets to the existing Mac, PC and Linux secure clients. In fact, the system is so secure that certain governments (the USA, Saudi Arabia, etc) might get scared of their citizens using it. Continue reading

Industry reacts positively to Apple’s iPad 3 launch
Rating: Rumours of iPad mini prove false, though
It wasn’t exactly a well-kept secret. However, the industry’s reaction to Apple’s launch of the iPad 3 yesterday [March 7th 2012] has been pretty positive. According to Mike Anderson, CEO with Chelsea Apps Factory, “The new device is also certainly going to be a shot in the arm for the apps business.” Mark Watson, an evp for technology and engineering with Antenna, observed, “The apps that Apple demonstrated as part of their announcement as well as the improved integration of services like iCloud suggest that this device is going to reinforce Apple’s position as first-choice tablet and market leader.” Significantly, Apple still needs to do more Fred Huet, md with Greenwich Consulting, thinks. “While the iCloud is a good offering, further functionality is needed in order to up Apple’s game against the likes of Google and Amazon,” he argued. Lynnette Prigmore, head of product with Proporta, also praised the hardware. “We’re particularly excited to see the much awaited 4G LTE feature with a 9 hour battery life,” she claimed. Brit operators fail to announce Eurotunnel coverage
Rating: Only those entering Blighty roam onto French networks
Curiouser and curiouser. It appears that the situation with the Eurotunnel/Eurostar roll out of mobile services in the Channel Tunnel is far more complicated than it might first appear. GoMo News has just received a message from Ian Hood on behalf of a company called Axell Wireless. He explains that Britsh expertise is, in fact, being employed to provide wireless coverage within the tunnel. Axell does – as GoMo News hinted – use a fibre optic based Distributed Antenna System (DAS). Which is exactly what we suggested – except we mentioned a rival product from Zinwave. Reading between the lines, the major difference is that the French have announced availability of such a service but the UK operators have not. Continue reading

Opera Mini browser finally makes it onto BlackBerry App World
Rating: Will it work if BlackBerry crashes again we wonder?
Although it has actually been compatible with the BlackBerry OS for some years, the Opera Mini browser has finally made it onto the BlackBerry App World app store. Savvy BlackBerry users have been saving money on their data plans by downloading it manually from http:/m.opera.com. Having it made easily accessible on the official BlackBerry App World should ensure much wider usage if nothing else than the fact that consumers trust the official download sites for their brand of mobile OS. You have to wonder why it has taken so long to happen? Perhaps RIM is waking up to harsh commercial realities? Continue reading

The facts behind user privacy according to Mobclix
Rating: Advertising network issues resolute rebuttal to Channel 4 show
Velti/Mobclix has respond to a story that ran on the UK’s Channel 4 News sounding a privacy alarm on Android apps sharing personal data with advertisers and alluding to the possibility that Mobclix facilitates the storage of private user data. The TV programme provided the basis for this earlier GoMo News story. Mobclix points out that the entire programme only suggests that it’s ‘possible‘ for all kinds of bad things to happen with user data on mobile devices, specifically when users download apps that use networks to target advertising. The reporter cites no actual evidence that a network indeed is compromising user privacy in this way. Continue reading
British PM provides great endorsement for iPad
Rating: UK civil servants create £20,000 custom app for him
You’re probably never going to see it appear on the Apple iTunes App Store but the British tax payer has just forked out £20,000 for the development of an iOS app for the Prime Minister’s own personal iPad. Apparently developed by the Cabinet Office, it will provide David Cameron with a ‘management dashboard’ that will pull in the latest information from across various government agencies. So it will provide the PM with instant access to crime statistics; unemployment figures; NHS waiting lists; and the latest polling data. It will be pretty socially aware too, being able to pull in stuff from Google and Twitter (no mention of Facebook, though). There’s even rumours that modified versions may be made available to other users within the British Government. Continue reading
