Formula One app for Sony TVs discovered by chance
Rating: Came across this Beeb app when researching connected TV
Chatting with Jim Somers, who is chief marketing and strategy officer, from Antenna Software, he let slip that if mobile/cellular is going to face a challenge in the future it will be from IP/connected TV. That challenge will especially apply when it comes to shares of the global advertising pie. GoMobile News had always assumed that IP TV is always allied to fixed broadband but Somers pointed out that that’s not necessarily the case. In rural areas connectivity could be supplied by some form of 4G – whether it’s LTE or WiMAX based. So whilst doing some background research, we discovered that the BBC has just announced the availability of a Formula 1 app for Sony TVs. Continue reading

Guest Post: Matt Haran looks at the Surface Tablet
Microsoft Surface: A tablet for business presentations and construction calculations
While Apple has sold many tablets and mobile devices to business professionals, many saw a disconnection between the computer they use for work and the tablet they use for play. For example, people connected to Windows for work functions had to make do with limited bridges from the tablet world to the work world. For these professionals, Windows has released the Surface, an answer to tablet devices released by Apple and various Android-based companies in the last few years. Complete with a full keyboard case and hefty Wi-Fi antennae, this tablet offers business pros their beloved Excel spreadsheets and the capability to run complex construction tools for design pros. In short, the Surface is clearly meant to offer the feeling of a work laptop with tablet capabilities Continue reading
RIM has done its homework with BlackBerry v.10
Rating: GoMobile News meet’s with RIM’s Vivek Bhardwaj
RIM’s PR people billed it as a ‘hands-on’ session with the latest (and officially still unreleased) version of the BlackBerry OS. But GoMobile News came away fromour meeting with a more positive feeling about the Canadian mobile phone supplier’s future in the industry. The company has not just been looking at what the competition can offer in order to match it, but it has also been looking at what it does best. With BlackBerry v.10, the company has gone back to a principle which we first encountered with Sendo (the defunct British handset supplier). That is, a mobile phone should be usable with just one hand. Continue reading

Rating: Nokia Lumia range not fully upgradeable from W7 Mango
The much-anticipated Windows Phone 8 (WP8 Apollo) is finally here and its features were shown yesterday [June 20th 2012] at the Microsoft Phone Developer Summit. This news platform is equipped with the right tools to satisfy the market’s appetite for innovation, according to Malik Saadi, principal analyst with Informa Telecoms & Media. It presents a challenge to rivals like the ageing Apple iOS. Although the existing Windows Phone 7 (WP7) will be upgraded to include some high-level features of WP8, the true capabilities of this platform will only sparkle when new enabled devices are launched. Vungle comes clean on $1m incentive scheme
Rating: Just stick an in-app video trailer into your mobile app or game
Around six weeks ago, the mobile video ad-network, Vungle came out of stealth with the announcement of its $2 million seed capital from investors. The good news is that the company has announced that half of the funds raised ($1 million) is going towards a fund designed to attract mobile app developers to its platform. To date, the Vungle mobile app video trailer network was in closed beta but from today [June 12th 2012], the network will be going self-serve. Since Vungle has come up with an entirely new ad-unit for mobile, the company needs to sign up as many publishers as they can to meet their advertising demand. Hence the S1 million incentive programme. Continue reading
Swantee calls for 4G in UK right now
Rating: Is it a level playing field though?
Olaf Swantee, CEO with Everything Everywhere (the combination of T-Mobile UK and France Telecom’s Orange UK) made a very impassioned plea to the powers-that-be in the UK to let his network start offering 4G services over its existing spectrum allocation. This was at the launch of the DigiWorld 2012 Yearbook in London. He made a very forceful argument that the status quo leaves the UK trailing miles behind other developed economies. It is so easy to feel sympathetic with Mr Swantee when the UK has traditionally led the world in the telecommunications high tech stakes. However, there’s the minor issue of level playing fields.
