Antenna_survey Marketers to spend circa £340K on mobile projects in near future

Rating: Dissatisfaction driving more projects in-house

Antenna Software has just released the results of research into brands’ mobile projects. The research was conducted by Vanson Bourne, who interviewed 1,000 business decision makers for the survey. The main finding from the research is that marketers intend to invest on average £340,000 in consumer mobile projects over the next 12-18 months. Significantly, the research also found that only on in five UK and US businesses have seen their customer-facing mobile projects adopted by ‘the majority’ of the consumers they were targeting. The research also indicates that investment in the use of outside creative agencies will likely decrease as brands look for more control over the development and management of their mobile initiatives. Digiworld_2012 IDATE launches latest DigitalWorld Yearbook

Rating: It’s an industry Bible and Goldmine of useful stats rolled into one

GoMobile News had the pleasure of attending the launch of the DigiWorld Yearbook 2012 in London. This publication is now in its 12th year and has rapidly established itself as something of a Bible for the mobile industry – although in effect its remit covers the entire digital economy. What we took away from this launch was the publication’s conclusion that there are three big game changers at work within the cellular industry: – mobile everywhere; content in the cloud; and big data. The launch was accompanies by a keynote speech from Olaf Swantee, CEO, Everything Everywhere. He used the opportunity to make an impassioned plea for his company to be able to roll out 4G in the 1800 MHz spectrum. Continue reading

Psion_logo Motorola acquires rump of Psion for $200 million

Rating: One of the pioneers of mobile computing

Well it appears that Motorola Solutions has acquired the remnants of Psion in a deal worth around £129 million ($200 million). Incidentally, that’s not the same part of Motorola which makes mobile phones and was recently sold to Google. That was the Motorola Mobility half of the business. Incidentally, there are rumours that Google may be interested in flogging off the Motorola brand and phone technology (but not the patents) to China’s Huawei. It seems Motorola wants Psion for its expertise in creating ruggedized mobile computers. Continue reading

We7 logo Digital music sectors hots up with moves from Amazon and Tesco

Rating: Apple’s iTunes dominance is under threat

It seems that Apple’s dominance of the digital music space via its iTunes Store may be weakening as other big instry players try to muscle in on its dominance. Recent news has confirmed that Amazon has just signed a deal with four major record companies in the USA for full licensing rights to their music. The idea is that if music lovers decide to store their own music in Amazon’s cloud based service they can listen to it anywhere. This is particularly appealing to smartphone and tablets users who probably hold the majority of their music collections on a desktop or laptop computer. The other major news last week was that Tesco has purchased a majority stake in We7, a British digital music service. (See our previous story on We7 here). Continue reading

Hwan Chung Guest Post: NFC – so near, yet so far

Hwan Chung, CEO at Danal Europe, looks at why NFC has yet to take off and what the mobile payments industry can do to get more consumers behind it

On the face of it, the future for NFC (Near Field Communication) looks very bright. Analysts have predicted that by 2015, one in two mobile phones will be NFC-enabled and that NFC will facilitate transactions worth $74 billion. Yet, despite the impressive forecasts, the industry still has a long way to go before mobile payments even come close to matching the revenues made by cash or credit card. Continue reading

Get_cash_rbs Confusion reigns over RBS Get Cash facility

Rating: Is it restricted to Scottish Android-owning customers presently?

The Royal Bank of Scotland put out the news on June 13th [2012] that, ” From today RBS and NatWest customers can choose to ditch their debit cards in favour of their Android phones, with a new innovation that allows them to ‘GetCash’ from an ATM without needing a debit card.” The Banks customers can request the cash on their mobile and a six digit pin will be generated. This code is entered at an ATM; the amount of cash confirmed, and funds distributed accordingly. Great. Ben Green, head of mobile at NatWest and RBS, commented, “This has never been done anywhere in the UK, and yet is a really simple and secure way to help our customers get cash whenever and wherever they need it.” Unfortunately, it didn’t make it very clear which handsets could use the app and which customers are eligible. vertu_logo_2006_12_22 Nokia disposes of one of its remaining profitable bits – Vertu

Rating: Microsoft probably aiming to do a Sendo on Nokia

What kind of madness is this? Nokia is in dire straights – nobody disputes that. It has just been forced to announce that another 10,000 jobs will have to go at Nokia. The reason is blatantly obvious. Nokia is in the business of making mobile phones. What does the market demand at the moment? Android handsets – that’s what people want. Let’s face it, there’s no way in the world that Apple is going to licence iOS to Nokia which is the only other way out.Android is the only way. So how does the company react? Offer Android handsets? No, it only decides to sell its stake in one of the last and only really profitable parts of its business – luxury handset vendor, Vertu. Continue reading

Overblog-logo Video ad friendly Overblog platform launches into UK

Rating: Gives bloggers the chance to monetise their content

Claiming to be the Number One blogging platform in Europe, Overblog, has now launch of its new platform into the UK. The idea behind Overblog is that it brings together the fragmented social postings of bloggers into a single live stream. Significantly, there are many aspects of Overblog that are entirely mobile friendly. For example, Overblog supports live video streaming from your mobile phone. The major incentive for bloggers to migrate to the Overblog platform, however, seems to be the chance to monetise their content. This facility has been made pssible by a merger between Overblog and Ebuzzing – a leader in social video advertising back in 2010. Continue reading

damaged_iphone2 Guest Post: Expensive mobile phones and their safe use through insurance

by Muhammad Azam

Smartphones are loved by just about every other person. It is not just the fact that people use their mobile phones for the sake of calling and texting. They now want the newest of all built-in technology features inside their handsets. They do not want to carry too many gadgets – rather they want to have the least number of gadgets as possible with the most features that cover the functionalities of all gadgets. For example, the Samsung Galaxy (designed for humans) is a perfect example of a gadget that is able to provide its owner with the features of a good camera, Internet, 3G, surfing, exceptional apps, and all based on the Android OS. beauty_recommended P&G reveals Beauty Recommended mobile app courtesy of Grapple

Rating: We think you have to be female to understand it

If you had an online magazine which already reaches an audience of 1.8 million people, then you’d almost certainly want to create a mobile version of your product. Which is exactly what Procter & Gamble (P&G) has done courtesy of Grapple Mobile. It has just introduced a free mobile app for iPhone and Android called Beauty Recommended. This app features three interactive, virtual tours of London called  ’Beauty Spots’. The app is timed to coincide with the swarm of visitors to London this Summer for the Olympic Games. The tours apparently showcase the UK capital’s best known and loved destinations – as well as revealing historical and hidden beauties to even the most seasoned of Londoners. Let’s just hope the general public understand what this app has to offer. GoMobile News was perplexed. Continue reading
