Ever felt your bag of Fritos wasn’t interactive enough? If you live in Mexico, that’s no longer a problem. The Frito Lay brand in Mexico, Sabritas, has now placed mobile barcodes on the back of millions of packs of special edition Halloween Cheetos, in a deal with barcoding company Scanbuy.
What’s the deal?
Based on Scanbuy technology, Sabritas is placing the 2d barcodes on the back of promotional bags of Cheetos:
Alongside the picture are a simple set of instructions on how to download and use Scanlife, the scanning application from Scanbuy (although in Mexico it’s called Códigos Ideas, or “Codes Ideas”). Códigos Ideas is coming pre-loaded on selected Telcel handsets, but the presence of the instructions gives non-Telcel subscribers a clear way to get access to the software. When a user scans one of these codes with the app, their phone will automatically begin a download of a branded Sabritas wallpaper.
As usual with Scanbuy promotions, the code being used is EZCode, but Scanlife will also read QR code and Datamatrix.
What we think?
The actual implementation here is simpler than a lot of the things we’ve come to expect from mobile barcodes. A simple content download wouldn’t really be enough to get anyone excited in the States or in Europe. But that’s not really the important thing about this deal… not from Scanbuy’s point of view anyway. Because every single person who does download that custom wallpaper in Mexico now has Scanlife loaded onto their device. And that’s worth its weight in gold to the company.
