Rating: Am I the only one sick of Google?

By Bena Roberts

Another day, another dollar another Google story. Today not only are we plagued with even more hype surrounding a Google phone – 3 UK also pimps Google onto its 3 Portal.

ARGGHHHH. I think the Google spin doctors need to go on holiday (please).

From the press release
John Penberthy-Smith, Marketing Director, 3 UK, said: “We are delighted to be able to give our customers a richer mobile internet experience through adding these innovative Google products to our service today. Our objective is to make sure that our customers have an experience which gets closer and closer to the one you would expect when using your home PC, but on your mobile device, wherever you are. We’re not about forcing people to use a particular service or brand – we aim to let you choose which one you prefer.”

What we think?
This is a classic me too story. All mobile operators are introducing Google so 3 has to as well. We predict that all mobile branded players will be on all the decks of mobile operators in the next 18 months. But just as it is choice we expect mobile operators to start launching their own off-portal assaults to ensure just as much brand presence and leverage off-portal as they do on-portal.

The content market is apparently booming at the moment and all operators – what ever the strategy need to make sure that selling in-house content (first) is and remains the priority.

Google has its own ambitions and just as Google shot AOL in the foot all those years ago, I am in no doubt that it will do the same to mobile operators everywhere.
