Back in February, we reported on a deal between global mobile ad network InMobi and a company called Cooliris that uses 3D to make mobile user-interfaces look amazing. Today, we finally see the product of that deal, as they two companies launch what they claim is the first live 3D advertising campaign on iPad.
What’s the deal?
The basic idea is that you should be able to place an interactive, 3D object into an iPad ad. People who might be interested in buying that object (be it a camera, a car or a toothbrush) can then use their touch-screen to rotate the device, zoom in on it, and get a good look. It even moves the object in response to the iPad moving. Cooliris ensures that with proper 3D and lighting effects, the ads look really good:
The ad is only running in the UK for the moment, and is being run by Starcom MediaVest Group. Rob Jonas, VP and MD, Europe and Middle East, InMobi, said “we believe this to be an industry first. Starcom is looking for innovation in all of its available media channels and we’re proud that InMobi’s technology platform, in conjunction with Cooliris 3D ad technology, has enabled Starcom to bring this innovative campaign to market in this way.”
What we think?
Revolutionary? No, not really. It’s basically just super-swanky display advertising. But it is super-swanky.
