Ad-supported phonecall company Talkster releases mobile software Talki
Rating: New service makes international calls easier and gives unlimited texts
Launched last autumn, Talkster provides a service that dramatically reduces the cost of international calls. If a user places an international call through Talkster’s Free World Dialing service, Talkster pays the international part of the call. The user is only charged local rates, in return for listening to a ten second ad. Today Talkster has released it’s new product. Talki is a software package that makes using the Talkster service much easier.
What does Talki do?
The software will still provide the exact same service that Talkster customers are used to, but it will also add an unlimited texting and picture messaging function. Unfortunately, the texting part of the service only applies when you are sending SMS or MMS to other people with Talki on their mobiles. Talki will still send an SMS for you if you’re sending to someone who doesn’t have it, but regular charges will apply. However, Talki does make up for this somewhat by giving it’s users 10 free SMS a week that can be sent to anyone, anywhere. And, last but not least, talki-to-talki texts have no character limit.
From the release:
“Last year when we began planning for the talki launch we did not know the economy would become so bad, and so close to the holidays,” said James Wanless, the COO of Talkster. “With talki we are not only going to save our customers up to 75 percent over their normal mobile plans, we’re making it even easier for them to user their mobile phones to communicate with their family and friends.”
What we think?
This is a good service and, importantly, it’s being launched at the right time. It’s Christmas, people are going to want to contact family members and friends who are dispersed all over the world. A company who says it can do that for you for the price of a local call is going to attract attention. And throwing free SMS and picture texts into the bargain is the kind of thing that will cause people to stick around, and not abandon the service like the proverbial Christmas puppy.
