Rating: Metrics show that ad requests from iPhone outnumber any other device

Mobile advertiser AdMob carries a huge number of ads across its platform. One of the platforms handier functions is to collect metrics on every interaction with it. The monthly report from AdMob for October 2008 revealed an interested new fact. With over 4 million different iPhones reached last month, Apples 3G device is now the device most used to access ads over their network.

What are the details?

The Motorola RAZR used to be the big dog on campus, both in terms of sales and use. But having lost out to the 3G iPhone in sales numbers earlier this month, it should come as no surprise that it’s now dipped below in ad connectivity as well.

This isn’t an entirely global phenomenon, though. In the UK, the iPhone is still number 3, coming in behind both the Nokia N95 and Sony Ericssons’ K800i. Even in the US, where the overwhelming majority of requests came from, the RAZR is still the most used device. The official release is awash with figures and graphs, but the main figures are covered in this chart showing total number of iPhone requests worldwide in October:

What we think?

While this is certainly good news for Apple, it’s not the end of the road. The US alone accounted for 65% of all requests made to AdMob through iPhone and, like in the UK, the iPhone is not actually the top device. No doubt the metrics gotten from these countries (which, incidentally, are the two countries where AdMob have offices) are quite accurate and dependable.

The other 35% of those requests come from countries where AdMob has a smaller presence. In most European countries, Japan, Singapore and the loosely termed Other Countries, iPhone’s are the number one device… for accessing Admob ads. But what other local networks are they accessing? I’ll have to dig further into metrics from other sources. This report is certainly a very good indication of how things are going in the US, but it’s too premature to claim global victory for iPhone just yet.
