AdMob launches mobile advertising unit for Android

AdMob announced today that it has launched its first advertising unit for Android applications. The unit will let developers to monetise their apps on the new device platform.

As the app market for Android grows, AdMob’s new unit will help advertisers reach the consumers using apps on their Android devices. AccuWeather, Jirbo, and TapJoy are the first companies to sign up for the unit.

From the release:

“Android’s open platform enables developers to build rich mobile applications that provide a great experience for users,” said Ali Diab, Vice President of Product Management for AdMob. “We are already seeing strong interest in developing applications for Android-based devices, similar to what we saw with the iPhone last summer, and are very excited to take the lead in helping developers monetise their applications on this fast-growing device platform.”

“We’ve partnered with AdMob to monetise our mobile services for several years now and continue to get great results working with them on our mobile Web site and in our iPhone application,” said David Mitchell, Director, Wireless Services, AccuWeather. “We are excited to extend this successful relationship with AdMob and start monetising our new Android application.”

What we think?

Proper advertising is a god-send for app developers, so this will be a good thing for the Android Marketplace. It’s specially important in an open environment like Android, because this is where off-deck producers will really get the opportunity to make profit independent of the carriers. AdMob already serves 450 iPhone apps, but it will be interesting to see what kind of take up they get on an open market.

Thanks for sharing this information. Yes, it does seem to be a huge help to mobile developers using a service for advertising (rather than setting up the whole system themselves). It’ll be interesting to see if Admob gets the same quantity and quality of clients in the Android marketplace, along with Windows Mobile and Palm.
