Rating: …and counting

AdMob, the mobile advertising marketplace, has served one billion mobile web ads in the past six months. It has also found that communities and downloads are the primary destinations for mobile web users.
The company started early in 2006. Omar Hamoui, Founder and CEO of AdMob, says, “In our first six months, we only served about thirty million ads and over the following six months we served one billion more.”
The US proved to be the network’s largest generator of mobile web traffic, with South Africa, surprisingly, as the second largest source of mobile web users across AdMob’s publisher base. The UK came in fourth place, with a 12% share of the mobile web traffic on the AdMob network with Romania, another surprise, in fifth place.
Across the AdMob network the top five countries in terms of traffic are:
1. US 20% (90m page views/month)
2. South Africa 15% (66m page views/month)
3. India 13% (57m page views/month)
4. UK 12% (53m page views/month)
5. Romania 5% (22m page views/month)
The traffic breakdown by channel is:
1. Communities 45%
2. Downloads 44%
3. Portals 8%
4. Entertainment 2%
5. News and Information 1%
Research firm eMarketer reckons that marketing through mobile phones is poised to become an important medium for advertisers, with predictions that brands will be spending nearly USD 5bn on mobile advertising in 2011, up from USD 421m in 2006.
We beg to differ. Lots of trends are happening at once in mobile, but the common driver is the desperate need to monetise data services. The UK’s BBC and the US’ Public Broadcasting Service aside, just about every information/entertainment service is funded wholly or in part by advertising revenue. There is no reason to think that mobile is somehow immune.
In addition, for lots of people in developing economies, mobile is the only screen they have. And just remember too that while we rejoice at the many people who now have access to telecoms because of mobile, much more than half of the world’s population hasn’t – yet. So by 2011, we could 5bn mobile phone users, aka potential customers whose eye balls someone wants to attract.
