Adult Content at World Telemedia

When the CEO of one of the biggest adult entertainment companies exhibiting at World Telemedia told me, “I could have been a bunny girl and if I play my cards right – it still might be possible”; I realized that I was treading on dangerous ground.

The big boys have come to mobile and adult is and will be a success. In an industry pained with issues of screen size and picture quality the mobile porn and adult companies are doing something right. Image is everything and new services favour MMS snacks in the form of “hot” pictures rather than constant live streaming. Well at least this is what seems to be selling. Wallpapers and images can be discreet or public on mobile and demand is growing for mobile adult services.

The headache for adult content on mobile is the categorization issue. Adult content needs to be better categorized. The trouble is that saucy, naughty or chat and flirt services are bundled into the adult category bucket.

This means that potential purchasers or content are shying away from services that might actually appeal to them. I met two German companies that were eager and already offering tailored mobile dating services. They argued that mobile dating was being pimped by some companies and turned into a premium sms, mms or video calling style of service that damaged their “quality” services.

Categorization for mobile adult content services is also a regulatory issue and content locks are already in place across the UK and some of Europe. A Dutch mobile operator suggested that content filtering was not necessary and self-regulation was the way forward as this way users could personalize and decide what they want and how they want to consume.

This is an interesting notion but I think that categories that clearly identify which services are being offered and what they do is essential to educate mobile users. I was taken aback at how simple Strip SMS services are and how fun they are to play and use.

But I would have never found the services on a mobile portal unless my content lock was turned off – or I had phoned in to register or paid GBP 5 to have the lock removed.

It’s a tricky situation as mobile operators need to guard against adult and porn – but too much regulation does hide some fun and “harmless” services from the public eye.

Better categorization such as fun adult or saucy birthday presents etc might be a better way to differentiate services than simply adult or over 18.
