I’ve been breathlessly reporting on every new Android device that’s announced by a manufacturer. Now PC-manufacturer Acer has confirmed the long-standing rumours about it’s plans to release an Android device. And much like every other announcement of this kind made, the release date has been given as “sometime later this year”. And dates like that can be changed all too easily.
What’s this new device going to be like?
Uh… no one knows, really. There are murmurings that Acer will be using it’s existing expertise in PC manufacter to create a device with an unprecedented amount of inter-operability with desktop machines. But other than that, and the fact it’ll be an Android device, there’s no FIRM details.
Also, this Android device is one amongst a line-up of ten devices from Acer, with every single other one of them running on Windows Mobile.
What we think?
I’m beginning to get less and less excited about these Android announcements. Samsung, Motorola, T-Mobile, Sony Ericssonn and others have been yammering about Android devices, but so far there is still only ONE device available. And, outside of the Samsung i7500, there have been very few confirmations. More than that, these companies talk about “plans” to release a device “in the future”. Pretty much nothing is concrete yet. And in this business, announcements like that are worth pretty much squat.
