AOL UK partners with WIN
AOL UK has partnered with WIN plc.
Why?
Basically, WIN will provide AOL with a mobile content delivery platform for web and mobile.
How?
WIN will provide AOL UK with a fully managed mobile content store for both mobile and online. This store will provide and supply entertainment, information and paid for content to AOL consumers.
From the press release
Announcing the deal, Chris Locke, Director of Mobile at AOL Europe, said: “AOL strives to offer our users a compelling mobile experience; we want to continue to enrich the web to mobile experience and attract new mobile users through attractive, made for mobile content. As such I am delighted that in WIN we have a quality partner who can deliver a strong and relevant service.”
Graham Rivers, WIN plc CEO, continued; “This is a milestone agreement for WIN and a tremendous endorsement of our capabilities. We are providing AOL with best of breed mobile and web storefront portals and services, as well as the capability to deliver its IM traffic to any UK mobile, regardless of network operator.”
What we think?
This sounds promising. Well done WIN. But what I think now needs to happens is that any mobile service must integrate and bolster the AOL messenger (AIM). I remember there was a time when everyone had a AIM but stronger marketing from competitors has left AOL fighting a lot harder than necessary for IM users.
What I would like to see is WIN’s product suite, AOL’s product suite but the focal point to be around AIM. This will drive growth, uptake and product placement for AOL moving forward.
