Apple & Google to go head to head

Rating: 3G iPhone and T-Mobile Android handset to appear in Q4 2008

The smartphone sector is getting red hot. My favourite rumours are that Apple will show its 3G iPhone on June 9th and T-Mobile will ship handsets based on the Google Android platform during Q4 2008.The T-Mobile news comes courtesy of Joe Sims, vice president and general manager of T-Mobile’s broadband and new business division. He’s been quoted as saying that he’d already seen prototypes of the Android-based phones. The story from Dow Jones also quoted Sims as saying, “We will have more than one product.”

Then the VNU Newswire picked up on comments made by Citi analysts Richard Gardner and Yeechang Lee.

The pair predict that Steve Jobs will feature the 3G iPhone during his keynote speech to the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference starting on June 9th in San Francisco. Over here in the UK, this speculation is being linked to the fact that O2 dropped the price of the 8GB iPhone by £100 and the Carphone Warehouse promptly sold out of them. Given it only costs £30 to unlock an iPhone, that leaves £70 available to ship the handsets to other markets profitably. It’s one way of meeting your sales targets.
