Apple release iPhone configuration utilities for business
If your one of those early adopters and want to use your iPhone in an enterprise solution Apple have released two web based software configuration utilities, iPhone Configuration Web Utility 1.0 for Mac and iPhone Configuration Web Utility 1.0 for Windows to help you or your IT Department.
From the web site:
iPhone Configuration Web Utility lets you easily create, sign and distribute configuration profiles using a web browser.
Configuration profiles are XML files that contain device security policies, VPN configuration information, Wi-Fi settings, APN settings, Exchange account settings, mail settings, and certificates that permit iPhone and iPod touch to work with your enterprise systems.
For instructions on how to use iPhone Configuration Web Utility, see the iPhone and iPod touch Enterprise Deployment Guide, available here.
There is also a more powerful mac only version iPhone Configuration Utility 1.0 for Mac OS X that adds the ability to “track and install provisioning profiles and authorized applications, and capture device information including console logs.” There is no windows version of this at the moment.
NOTE: The MAC version requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later
Windows requires XP (SP2) Windows Vista (32-bit).
We say: We are not responsible if it bricks your system!! Read the instructions - but it is great to see Apple trying to support this area - I’m seriously surprised they have not done more to publicise this and to make the transition to the iPhone for enterprises easier. After all if we understand Apple it’s the market they are going after. After the hype and even one flambait blogger claiming that RIM and BlackBerry is “dead, dead, dead” we will see if the IT departments in the world of blue chip companies are as excited as running Apple solutions and the iPhone as consumers are.
