CoreMedia and Discretix have joined forces to accelerate
deployment of mobile content services. CoreMedia provides software solutions for convergent content business while Discretix, offers embedded security and digital rights management (DRM) for mobile devices and flash memory.

Now they’ve reached a collaboration agreement to accelerate the deployment of Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) DRM 2.0 and Windows Media-DRM solutions.

The plan is to achieve interoperable, robust, end-to-end, secure mobile DRM solutions for mobile operators and content owners that facilitate cost effective deployment and simplify the user experience. The companies believe that these two key elements will ensure a rapid uptake of digital content services.

Why should this work when so very many other attempts have failed? Discretix reckons CoreMedia is the most widely deployed provider of DRM to mobile operators while CoreMedia was attracted by, “Discretix’s large installed base of embedded security solutions, combined with their Multi-Scheme DRM Client software that complements the CoreMedia technology”.

It’s a good base to start from, but collaborations, joint ventures and mergers don’t come with any guarantee of success, indeed quite the reverse. Their success is not about technology, but about how well two different cultures and sets of employees get along. Too often one party has the attitude of “what’s yours is mine and what’s mine is mine” concerning access to technology and customers.

Great idea, time will tell.
