Having initially restricted itself to BREW based handsets and just one operator – Alltel, Aricent has widened the scope of its Celltop handset environment to include Java (J2ME) mobile phones.
This enables Aricent to target the much larger number of GSM based operators.
To facilitate this move, Aricent is making a SDK available for both J2ME and BREW uiOne based handsets. The company is also working on alternative language versions of Celltop including Spanish, Portuguese and Hindi.
Significantly the company claims that Celltop incorporates watermark technology enabling advertisements to be superimposed on the base screen or wallpaper of the mobile handset. Suppliers can then decide whether to provide an ‘opt in’ or ‘opt out’ model for this advertising content.
The company is hoping that since the Celltop interface works in a similar way to widgets on a PC’s desktop, this will encourage developers to create products for the Celltop platform. The objective with Celltop is to facilitate content discovery with the minimum of clicks, of course.
Naturally Alltel itself, which has used the product since January 2007 describes Celltop as “a tremendous success. Obviously Aricent is now hoping to repeat that success on a global scale.
