ASAP Systems launches mobile barcode apps for its Passport tracking system

ASAP Systems today introduced its new barcode mobile software apps for its Passport system. The business-end apps are highly customizable and can be used for tracking, for example, inventory location, stock levels or police department evidence.

The apps run on Motorola handheld barcode scanners, and synchronise with a parent desktop version. This allows mobile users to use all the system functions on the units themselves, without having to use the desktop application.

From the release:

“We designed our systems and user interface to meet today’s highly mobile needs of our customers and to meet current economic conditions,” said Elie Jean Touma, president of ASAP Systems. “In this tough economy, we sought ways to make the system work for our customers by eliminating recurring configuration and customization costs. We also made it easy to use so that a non-sophisticated computer user has the ability to customize the application within minutes and is able to obtain all the information he needs within seconds. Our goal is to give a company’s management and employees total control over their inventory and assets by providing complete turnkey tracking solutions. We want people to have all their inventory and all their asset management available to them, whenever or wherever, even if they only step out of the office for a few hours.”

What we think?

While this incarnation of the Passport system only runs on Motorola barcode scanners, there’s no reason for it to stay there. As barcode scanning software, phone camera’s, and barcodes themselves become more sophisticated, I imagine you’ll see these kinds of functions becoming part of smartphones. All the different pieces probably already exist in place for businesses to run complete inventory and tracking systems from smartphones - they just all need to put into play properly.
