Mark this day, go on write it in your diary. It’s an important day. Prey tell I hear you cry, why be it? Well, are you sitting comfortably!. ASOCS and Fujitsu have announced the MP100 Multicomm processor….come on cheer!! This is significant for the future of mobile device development.

As mobile wireless networks sprout forth we have a mixture of wireless interfaces. You hear them branded about like car accessories…..ooh it has/going to have 3.5G, WiMAX, LTE, 2G, all meaning that your phone needs to run multiple wireless networks to create the convergent lifestyle everyone is predicting and wanting.

Each wireless network requires a separate chip inside your phone (although there are Wi-Fi/Bluetooth single chips). So you have chips wireless, bluetooth, GPS etc. That’s a lot of chips when you throw in GPS, Mobile TV, and Audio and Video networks. Now what those clever folks at ASOCS have done is to make a chip essentially upgradable by software..so if you have a 3G handset a software update can make it LTE..Pretty amazing!!! but that’s not all..

The bit that really kicks ass is the fact you can three different wireless interfaces running on that one chip!!!! all upgradeable by software. But there’s more, the chip can effectively be configured in real time, so that you can access any wireless network, 3G, 4G, WiMAX when you need it. So your only in a 3G area, no worries……..let the phone handle it!

This is really a breakthrough. Buy your phone today and then the manufacturer offers you HD Mobile TV or LTE, no worries the update will sort it. How handset manufacturers will see this I’m not sure. ASOCS only design and test the chip, someone else has to make them by the bucket load. As most new chips they will start out expensive to add to a handset, Bluetooth was a fine example of this so it may still be sometime before we see a handset on the market with this kind of convergence technology..but I think I have see the future..and its pretty darn cool!
