AVAST Software shows how to launch a successful Android app

Rating: 10m downloads and highest ranking in class

It’s nice to see one of GoMobile News‘ favourite apps doing so well. AVAST Software has just informed us that its avast! Free Mobile Security app for Android passed an important milestone -10 million installations, by August 1st 2012. The company’s goal is to reach 20 million installations by Q1 2013. AVAST claims that avast! Free Mobile Security is the highest ranked security solution in the Google Play store (formerly Android Market) with 4.7 out of 5 stars. According to Ondrej Vlcek, CTO with AVAST Software, “Our recipe for success was simple. We took the best anti-theft/anti-loss technology available, added a full-featured anti-virus, and launched the app for free, just before Xmas.”

Useful advice on how to get your Android app up the top of the rankings, then.

The company has also just released a new version,2.0, this month [ August 2012] which includes many enhanced features.

AVAST claims it was the first software house to introduce special protection features designed for rooted phones, making any unauthorised removal of the anti-theft protection virtually impossible.

Even trying to restore factory settings won’t work. One of the ironies here is that rival mobile security product flag up avast! as dangerous because it is rooted rather than coming from a ‘trusted source’.

Included in version 2.0 are features such as a ‘Network Meter’ to prevent any malware or grey-zone application from running high data transfers without the user’s knowledge.

Another new feature is ‘SiteCorrect’ technology which is designed to auto-correct mistyped URLs and protect users from typo-squatting sites.

GoMobile News rather suspects that AVAST has improved its software update procedures as updating to version 2.0 was nowhere near as complex as previously.
