BitTorrent Media File Sharing on Mobile

by: Bena Roberts Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

During Mobile World Congress I was a judge at the MoMo Peer Awards with a number of key industry executives. I was the only woman there and I have to admit I came unstuck at the topic of BitTorrent.

BitTorrent is that ability to share rich media online. One of the companies that presented was called mbit.tv.  Now, I couldn’t really hear the ladies presentation at the event and relied on the other members of the panel to help me.  Telefonica’s Carlos Domingo and Sirous Kavehercy from Acision were huge fans. So then I had to ask; “is this torrent thing the stuff my husband leaves the PC on night time for?”

They looked at me and asked if my husband was a techie? I responded yes and they replied “yes”.

So basically its true sharing and downloading of digital media content and mbit.tv is bringing this to mobile – which is disruptive. Horrendously expensive at the moment (without flat rates) but a great idea.

So mbit provides mobile media file sharing

From the website:
With the mbit.tv client, you can subscribe to the channels to download these big video files and wake up to have the content during your way to work.

With our award-winning technology, the mbit protocol can help to resume the downloads even if the download is disrupted. Especially if you need to switch the phone off for an important meeting or enter the subway.

For operators, with such a channel to encourage super-distribution, it can leverage on the “word-of-mouth” marketing to achieve the viral effect and increase ARPU.

The software is currently available for Symbian S60 3rd edition and Java MIDP 2.0-enabled devices and requires an Internet connection.

What we think?
Now, I understand this everyone I have mentioned it to (male and geeky) love it. The fact that it works with WiFi etc is great so that you can use your home network to download and then avoid data costs and get rich media on devices.

I am not sure how many people have these very high end devices and that would be a hindrance – but this is definitely one to watch.
