Rating: Samsung dominates and HTC fading fast
The UK price comparison service, uSwitch.com has been mining the data from its monthly Mobile Tracker report. Some of the findings are self evident – such as the Samsung’s Galaxy S III continuing to rank as the UK’s most popular handset based on live searches and sales. However, there are a few surprises. GoMobile News was particularly intrigued to see that BlackBerry Curve 9320 has experienced something of a renaissance with a ranking as the UK’s sixth most popular handset. Which shows just how wrong those observers intent on writing off RIM as a major player in the industry actually are.In August, the BlackBerry Curve 9320 rose an impressive eight places and currently ranks as the UK’s sixth most popular handset.
uSwitch gives a somewhat grudging acknowledgement to the fact that RIM BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) facility is still very popular with the UK’s youth.
The Curve 9320 is presently available at a competitive price of a mere £10.50 per month and features preinstalled Facebook and Twitter apps as well as its QWERTY keyboard.
“In light of no new and flashy releases in August, one of the faithful stalwarts of the mobile scene, BlackBerry [RIM], has been able to make its return to the top ten, thanks to discounted deals and a loyalty to features such as the eminently excellent BlackBerry Messenger (BBM),” said Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com
Interestingly, uSwitch says that Samsung’s Galaxy S II was only pipped to the post for second place on the last day of the month by Apple’s iPhone 4S.
Samsung has had the last laugh because its Galaxy family took half of the top ten spots. It really has entirely taken the place of Nokia in everyone’s minds as the premier supplier of mobile phones.
“Until the new smartphones being unveiled in Berlin right now go on sale we will have to wait and see if the onset of the cold weather will bring with it a new handset to topple Samsung and Apple from the podium,” Doku observed.
USwitch picked out the Sony XPERIA T as promising the best high definition experience on a smartphone to date since it will also be 007’s mobile of choice in the next James Bond film, Skyfall.
The HTC One S is now dangerously close to the relegation zone, says uSwitch, as the tenth most popular smartphone after dropping three places. The One X from the HTC family has also dropped a position.
RIM will come back next year with it’s BB10, it should be a buzz.
