BlueWhaleMail, Ad sponsored push email for Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets

Rating. But it doesn’t bring a QWERTY keyboard with it does it?

If you have a Nokia Series 60 or Sony Ericsson Feature phone there is a new mobile application that aims to bring you a BlackBerry like email solution for free, if your happy to see banner advertising.
They Say: BlueWhaleMail which was created by a team that includes ex-BlackBerry developers, aims to offer a very high quality user experience for free through banner advertising. The service challenges the assumption that mobile users need to pay a premium or to buy a dedicated device in order to have a mobile service like push email. Michael Maguire, CTO of Blue Whale Systems compares BlueWhaleMail to popular email services on the fixed internet, where users accept advertising in exchange for free usage.

Said Michael Maguire, CTO of Blue Whale Systems “My team and I think there are some great dedicated mobile email devices out there – but we’re biased, because half of us helped build one of them.” Unfortunately the rest of the world’s 1.1 billion email users have phones with unusable, hard to configure in-built email that few people can be bothered to set-up.  With BlueWhaleMail, we’ve gone back to the drawing board so that people can keep the phone they like and still stay in touch on the go.”

“The complexity of setting up mobile applications on many phones is a great obstacle for most people so we’ve worked hard to make BlueWhaleMail child’s play to setup” continued Michael Maguire.

As well as email, BlueWhaleMail also notifies users of status updates and news items from Facebook, making it possible to send them a message or write on their wall in response. Like SMS, messages and notifications are displayed as soon as they are received without requiring users to manually connect to their inbox.

“We’re trying to make social networking; messaging, news feeds and status updates; as much a part of mobile life as Text Messaging. People who are unwilling to pay for or use a dedicated mobile email device still deserve a great mobile email service and that’s exactly what BlueWhaleMail offers,” said Richard Seward, founder and CEO of Blue Whale Systems Ltd. “Our service is the simplest choice for those wishing to stay on top of their social life while they’re away from their computer”.

We say: I’m all for bringing email to the masses. We have seen Nokia come to support BlackBerry protocols in a fair few models now and BlueWhaleMail is an interesting proposition, especially with its web based setup.

Perhaps the ultimate email solution isn’t just about a new service though but a new UI as well. I have had many email devices over the last 9 years or so. First the Palm Treo, then the first SPV on Orange to Nokia Communicators, XDA Execs and BlackBerry’s. Now I wont seriously consider a device for email that doesn’t have a qwerty keyboard, end of story but if you can put up with a phone keyboard for doing your email on then I would definalty check out BlueWhaleMail; and if you do, come back and tell us here at GoMo what you thought of it.
