Rating: its not that easy….

By Bena Roberts

According to a report in today’s Guardian UK MVNO Blyk is delayed. Now ETA is October.

Right now it would be very very easy to say I told you so – but the fact of the matter is that launching a brand new concept and an MVNO is extremely difficult.

For example – what on earth or where on earth is Extreme. I was in a room packed full of 100 plus people last May when Extreme took to the centre stage at the Informa MVNO event. Director of MVNO’s from Motorola was also there and extremely bullish. The Extreme MVNO was to rekindle push to talk. It was going to revolutionse mobile and it was believed that Motorola pumped a further USD 4 million into the venture.
There is still no Extreme and several people have said that its not only hot air – it’s a joke. Plagued with poor management and complete lack of understanding of the MVNO/Operator business. Poor old Vodafone was also duped as Extreme was to be its first MVNO baby.

But where does this leave Blyk?
Well basically its early mover advantage is eroding. Free, ad-funded, ad-supported are regular words in branded operators’ portfolios. 3 is pushing video and price plans for data are being slashed in Europe with flat-rates hot on the agenda. Even the splashiest launch ever will make realising Blyk ‘s plans difficult.
Last time I met Blyk Antii Ohrling (Co-Founder) he looked very well, he bought me a lovely glass of champagne - did the bottle pop too early?
