Bringing Opera to the Indian masses
Rating: have a BREW with it
Opera Software, which claims to be the only company to put the web on any device, is to provide Opera Mini on Tata Teleservices’ new BREW-enabled handsets. The browser will be made available first on the Huawei C2900i, a low end BREW-enabled handset. Tata Teleservices says it is India’s newest and fastest-growing telecom provider with a user base of more than 20 million.
This is good timing. According to Gartner, India’s mobile phone market is set for a period of rapid growth, with revenue from services expected to jump by more than 18% year on year for the next five years. Indian mobile data revenue is expected to outpace that of voice services and contribute to about a fifth of total revenues by 2011, doubling year on year.
These tidings are confirmed in a report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, which suggests that the number of Indian consumers connecting to the Internet via mobile handsets has more than doubled in just over a year-to 38 million from 16 million.
BKI Media will be testing Opera Mini 4 for the December issue of Mobile 2.0, which will be published on 19th of next month. I just hope I find it easier to get along with than Opera’s charismatic, Icelandic boss, Jon von Tetzchner. I’m sure he has a sense of humour, it’s just that he doesn’t think much of mine.
