Buffy the Vampire book to your mobile

Rating: MPS Mobile’s Cuban content more interesting

I suppose somebody would want to read the book of the Star Trek or Buffy the Vampire series on their mobile phone. If so they’re now in luck thanks to a deal between MPS Mobile  and Simon & Schuster. The publisher has made its content available to MPS which offers a service called the Global Reader. This isn’t – as you might expect – a software client, but a handset optimised mobile site instead. The site can be reached by keying wap.global-reader.com into the handset’s browser.

The company reckons it is compatible with at least 800 devices worldwide. Supposedly, typing in the key word Star Trek or The Secret and sending the message to 22646 will result in a WAP push message that saves typing out the whole URL.

Sadly, it didn’t work in the UK – it’s probably a Stateside shortcode. When I looked at the site using a Nokia E66, the typeface was so small I deemed it pointless trying to look at a book. There was no test content to try this out against. Big mistake.

I did try out the site’s search engine and it seemed to do an adequate job. Instead of a book, I spotted that the site also offers video content. And more surprisingly some really excellent Cuba music videos.

I downloaded one video – and luckily for me I was on 3G, because the 3GP file was rather large. The download process had triggered the standard Payforit payment mechanism which worked very smoothly.

Overall, however, MPS – which is part of MacMillan – will have its work cut out convincing handset owners this is a sensible way to acquire digital books.
