Carphone looks on the bright side of life
Rating: Well, it would, wouldn’t it?
Despite the existing gloom and doom – particularly in the retail space – it was nice to see the UK’s largest mobile phone reseller – the Carphone Warehouse – say it thought expansion will still happen.
In fact, what it actually said was that its new US based partner, Best Buy, plans to double Carphone’s existing retail earnings in five years.
No mean feat. Especially since the pair don’t intend to open their first ‘large format’ store in the UK until 2009.
The Carphone Warehouse said that its total mobile connections rose 9 per cent to 3.1 million in the 13 weeks to September 27th 2008.
Overall, subscription connections were up 21 per cent at 1.3 million while pre-pay connections were up 2 per cent.
Nonetheless, the official company statement said, “The immediate consumer outlook remains very uncertain.” Well, it would, wouldn’t it?
