Apple’s iPhone 5 regains the top spot in America
But elsewhere in the world Android is storming ahead
Apple has snatched back its lead of the US smartphone market from Google’s Android platform, though it’s at the expense of RIM’s BlackBerry devices and Microsoft’s Windows Phone. It is the first time since February [2012], when sales of the previous iPhone 4S were declining, that Apple has regained its No.1 slot in America. Continue reading
Microsoft eyes Europe to open new stores
Hopes to replicate success of Apple retail outlets
Software giant, Microsoft, has been in secret talks with landlords as part of a new strategy to open flagship stores in Europe as it moves increasingly into smartphones and other mobile devices. Britain is said to be high on the store opening agenda in a move that has parallels with Apple which already has two major retail outlets in Central London. If all goes to plan the first stores will open in 2013, though it’s thought Microsoft will reserve judgement until it has had a chance to assess how its first, recently-opened US outlets are performing. HTC plays down cost of patents settlement with Apple
Rumours it’s forking out $6 per Android phone dismissed as ‘outrageous’
Media speculation that HTC is paying Apple at least $6 per Android handset, in lieu of a patents settlement, has been dubbed “outrageous” by the Taiwanese phone maker’s CEO. Though the companies have not disclosed details of the settlement or the framework surrounding the licensing agreement, HTC’s chief executive Peter Chou insists the terms will not impact its fourth-quarter guidance. Golden handcuffs could shackle Imagination
Rating: £3 million payout to CEO, Hossein Yassaie, could cause upset
British chip designer Imagination Technologies, which amongst other things supplies graphics chips for Apple’s iPhone tablets, could well upset its shareholders in the coming days. The reason is that the company intends to pay the first portion of a £10 m ‘golden handcuffs’ deal to its CEO, Hossein Yassaie. In theory he will get around £3 million in December [2012]. Guest Post: Improvements in mobile web access & what’s driving them
by Geoff Dennis – director with Insight Manufacturing & blogger on Swuse.com
Mobile devices come with a variety of screen sizes and resolutions, far more varied than those in use with desktop computers. To deliver web content at an acceptable resolution for reading on a mobile device, the standard approach for a long time was to determine what device type it is such as iPhone 3GS. Next, look up the properties of this device in a database, and deliver content in a form that would seem to be the best fit to those properties. With such a wide variety of devices to cater for, testing that the content is displayed properly is constrained to the most popular devices in use at any given time. Continue reading
Adfonic Global AdMetrics report reveals Apple increases mobile advertising lead over Samsung in Q3 2012
Press release
November 19th 2012. Adfonic, the smarter mobile buying platform, has released its Global AdMetrics Report for Q3 2012, showing that while Apple and Samsung both increased their share of ad impressions globally, Apple widened its lead over Samsung. This is despite the increasing popularity of new Samsung devices during Q3 such as the Galaxy S III, which reached Adfonic’s global Top Ten mobile devices by share of ad impressions, while Apple’s iPhone 5, released towards the end of the quarter, had yet to impact on Adfonic’s mobile advertising platform. Bill & Steve could star in the same Apple movie
Rating: Microsoft did help to bail Jobs out back in 1997
GoMobile News normally steers well clear of Showbiz gossip but couldn’t help but notice a stry on BBC News entitled ‘Aaron Sorkin reveals Steve Jobs film plot‘. Apple fanboys will be overjoyed to hear that according to the Beeb, there could be at least two films made about Steve Job’s life with Apple. Naturally, the Beeb is tipping the Sorkin version as the top runner given that as a script writer Sorkin has done so well with The Social Network which was all about Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg. What fascinates us here at GoMobile Towers is that fact that Microsoft’s Bill Gates could easily be included in a film about Jobs. Continue reading
Apple pays out rare dividend in bid to halt stock decline
Apple is to spread a bit of cheer to despondent investors later today [15th November 2012] when it distributes $2.5 billion in dividends for only the second time in 17 years.
Until now shareholders have relied on the soaring price of Apple stock to get a return. But more recently Apple’s star has started to wane amid criticism that its latest iPhone and other devices are lacklustre and that, without the vision of founder Steve Jobs who died in October, it has lost its direction Continue reading
Q3 mobile sales generally down but smartphones still bucking trend
Overall mobile phones sales are continuing to slow but Apple and Samsung remain in the lead and accounting for almost half of worldwide purchases, latest third quarter figures from Gartner reveal.
As might be expected smartphones bucked the trend with sales up nearly 47 per cent over Q3 2011 though Nokia, despite its new Lumia handsets, still only managed to sell 7.2 million phones in this segment. The Finnish maker’s sales generally fell nearly 22 per cent as fewer Symbian handsets were sold – with Canadian BlackBerry maker taking up most of the slack with its operating system now boasting the No.3 slot after Android and Apple. UK ponders sales tax on foreign multinationals
High tech multinationals and others could be subjected to a new sales tax in Britain in a clampdown on how companies like Vodafone, Apple and Google avoid liabilities through complex offshore structures and other loopholes.
Later today [12th November 2012] several major US firms will be summmoned to appear before the government’s Public Accounts Committee amid growing concern over how they exploit weaknesses in the Inland Revenue system to minimise corporation tax. Continue reading
Apple settles all patent disputes with HTC
Rating: Agreement means current litigation between the 2 is dismissed
Is this more than just a co-incidence? How come HTC and Apple have chosen November 11th to end their legal battles. After all, in Europe – at least – today is Armistice Day which the marks the cessation of hostilities between the two side in World War 1. Luckily they didn’t send out the release at 11 am. Anyway the two major handset vendors say they have reached a global settlement that includes the dismissal of all current lawsuits and a ten-year license agreement. Continue reading
Judge to re-examine jury foreman’s role in Apple v Samsung trial
Should have revealed how earlier feud with Seagate drove him to ruin
A foreman at the centre of the landmark Apple versus Samsung trial could soon be called back and quizzed about whether he “concealed information.” The trial earlier this year left Samsung facing record damages of more than $1 billion for patent and design infringement relating to Apple’s iPhones and tablets. Apple still dominates mobile ad impressions
