motorola_motoactv Bad news for Apple – there’s already a Droid watch app market

Rating: Watch apps could prove useful bandwagon

GoMo News is extremely grateful to an article written in the Sunday Times [April 14th 2013] by Mark Harris, alerting us to the fact that’s there’s a complete sub section of the mobile apps sector we haven’t really identified before. What we are talking about are apps specifically designed for intelligent watches. These are ‘smart watches’ which link to a smartphone via a Bluetooth link. The reason for growing interest in such devices is, of course, the numerous rumours that Apple is plotting to release some kind of iWatch. The most interesting aspect here is that some software houses have already developed watch apps that are compatible with multiple devices. So Apple is faced with the prospect of apps appearing for the iWatch that have already been out on Google Play for a considerable time. Oh, dear. Continue reading

Plane-Finder-USA Plane finding AR app not banned in the USA after all

Rating: Our investigation reveals WP7 version the most expensive

There’s nothing like a little adverse publicity to aid your app sales, is there? Well, British software house Pinkfroot seems to have befitted from it in our case. The rumour going around was that its Plane Finder AR app had been banned in the USA. Chiefly because it could allegedly be used as a terrorist tool to shoot down aircraft. Actually, that suggestion was made back in 2010 and the app is very much available in the iTunes App Store now. To prove the point our investigator actually bought a copy of the app. What an effective sales tool that rumour was. Continue reading

matthew_candelaria Guest Post: Future smartphones probably won’t replace the laptop

by Dr Matthew Candelaria, a professional technology writer from WriterMC.com

The rise of the smartphone for internet usage seemed like the death knell for the laptop. Smartphones are relatively commonplace (Pew and Nielsen agree that still only 50 per cent of North Americans have them) and their usage is growing steadily. However, it is unlikely that smartphones will ever replace the laptop because of their inherent limitations and the rise of alternative technologies. Continue reading

imagine_logo Inspired platform combines high tech and premium content

Rating: Incorporates QR codes, Wi-fi, and AR

You may have blinked and missed it but at MWC Barcelona 2023 Imagine launched a new platform called Inspired which it claims is a global first. That’s because it claims to have merged emerging technology solutions – such as QR codes, Wi-fi, and augmented reality (AR) and premium publisher inventory into a single platform. The company claims the platform has been designed to simplify the process of running mobile campaigns. Plus it should help address a fragmented ecosystem by offering an open and self-service tool which focuses on end user experience. Continue reading

mark_haviland Guest Post: Trends in m-commerce from MWC 2013

by Mark Haviland, md with Rakuten LinkShare UK

Mobile World Congress Barcelona has morphed from a telecoms sector-specific trade show in years past to an industry event that has implications for everything digital. From retail, music and entertainment to gaming and social networking, smartphones and tablets are ubiquitous and many are waiting to hear how the latest apps, handsets and periphery technology will improve their everyday lives. The retail sector in particular has benefited from advancements in the mobile technology, and here are my three trends in the mobile shopping space which should cause a stir in 2013. NEC showcases consumer ad engagement technology

Rating: Mixes M2M comms with advertising world

You might think it impossible to put M2M (Machine-2-Machine) communications and advertising together in the same sentence, but here at the Mobile WorldCongress 2012, Japan’s NEC has managed it very easily. GoMobile News has been chatting with Gareth Price, head of new business strategy with NEC Europe. He explained how NEC has the ability to capture the kind of consumer engagement level data that most major brands/advertisers would kill for. Better still, Price revealed that this technology is here now and has even been rolled out in a genuine retail environment in Korea. Continue reading

Juniper_retail Reatilers will migrate their adspend to mobile

Rating: Retail websites still not mobile friendly enough, says Juniper

Reacting to mainly poor recent experiences on the High Street, retailers will almost double the $28 billion annual spend by on mobile marketing expected for 2013 to $55 billion by 2015. This is one of the key findings in a report entitled, ‘Retail mCommerce: Mobile & Tablet Marketing, Advertising & Coupon Strategies 2013-2017′  from Juniper Research. The report also found that adspend on both tablets and smartphones is continuing to grow strongly. Retailers (most notably in North America and Western Europe) are migrating their own adspend to digital in general, and mobile in particular, Juniper says. Continue reading

Stella_free 1000s of free Stella pints may be unclaimed

Rating: Stella Artois Greene King Christmas Blippar Promotion

Thousands of free pints of Stella Artois 4.8% in the Stella Artois Greene King Christmas Blippar Promotion may go unclaimed if GoMoBile News’ experience is anything to go by. We believe the who promotional push is too complex for the troups on the ground – the bar staff. When we finally did manage to win a free pint, none of the staff on duty in the Greene King pub we visit knew the code necessary to redeem the actual pint. Naturally, we appreciate that the use of such a code provides the promoters will valuable marketing data – such as how many pints were claimed and where they were claimed. However, no-one seems to have thought how the whole thing would work in the first place. Continue reading

stella_logo UK brewer gets into AR promotions via blippar

Rating: OK, Greene King, what happened to our free pint of Stella?

Here at GoMobile Towers we have always maintained that the drinks industry in the UK has become particularly attuned to the power of the smartphone (& tablet) in marketing and promotions. Hence, we have made frequent mention of the fact that QR codes have been making their appearance on such common ‘pub’ (public house) items such as beer mats and pump clips. In addition we’ve reported on ‘warcoding’ of QR codes in pubs like the Royal George here. Plus the use of QR codes on bottles of cider by Bulmers here. Now the drinks sector has moved onto AR (augmented reality) with an unholy alliance between image recognition specialist, blippar and pub chain/brewers, Greene King. With larger producer, Stella Artois, headlining this promotion. Continue reading

Lumia 920 heavily discounted Nokia still hasn’t got the app-generation

Rating: It’s not fancy covers, it’s apps they want

Looking at the way Nokia has just positioned its latest devices – two Windows Phone 8 handsets, doesn’t convince GoMobile News that the former world leading handset supplier has really grasped the app revolution. It’s good to see that Nokia’s PureView camera technology has made the leap from Symbian (with the 808) to the Windows Phone platform but do smartphone lovers really care that much about having the best camera inside a phone? These are the sort of people who happily pay top dollar for a smartphone whose screen smashes on a regular basis. The market has changed. Smartphone lovers want to be able to run the latest software not take the best quality pics. Continue reading

iprospect_logo GoMo has been hit with a bizarre SEO request

Rating: Does iProspect’s client, CSL Sofas, know about this?

GoMobile News has been hit with a bizarre SEO request from a London based ‘digital performance marketing specialist’ – iPospect. One of their specialists, Sam Barker, has emailed us to request the removal of eleven URLs. What is worrying is that iProspect claims to be a specialist in the mobile marketing sector, too. The reason for the request is that the software which GoMobile News utilises to publish our site – WordPress, generates additional URLs autotmatically. It’s not like were deliberately creating multiple URls. The story which iProspect is complaining about here is one concerning the use of AR within an iPhone app by a company called CSL Sofas. Oh dear, we’ve probably done it again and created multiple links to iProspects’ client. One thing is certain. We’re never, ever going to buy a sofa from CSL Sofas. Continue reading
