Hey, you get off of my iCloud
Rating: GoMo reader not too happy with male mail feature
The first must-have accessory for any keen iPhone user, it seems, is a personal computer. Have you ever tried to active an iPhone without one? Anyway, the second disadvantage to not possessing some kind of PC or Mac is personal data backup. One GoMo News reader has discovered this to his cost since he is in the habit of frequently losing his handset or dropping it into a sink (loo), etc. Which is a pain because he kept on losing all of his contacts and email. No problems, we told him. Just make sure you set up the iCloud on your smartphone next time you use it. Except we hadn’t realised just how useless the iCloud Mail feature is. Continue reading

GoMo’s protect your smartphone advice for Xmas
Rating: Inspired by Stonesoft’s Top ten tips
.We all know that significant numbers of handsets – especially smartphones, will be given as Xmas presents this year. However, consumers don’t naturally associate mobile phones with threats from hackers, viruses and malware. As Ash Patel, regional director with Stonesoft, says, “To a consumer, cybercrime may seem a distant threat that is mostly related to espionage between nation-states or hacking against big enterprises.” However, mobile devices are very easy to steal as we’ve reported before but they can contain seriously damaging personal data – such as credit card information and even login details for social networks. So Stonesoft has put together its own Top Ten tips on mobile security for Xmas time. Sound advice but not always entirely practical. Continue reading
OpenCloud helps put operators back in driving seat
Rating: especially when it comes to developing premium voice services
The ‘cloud’ is helping to “put mobile operators back in control” – especially when it comes to voice based services, according to Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, Until very recently, mobile operators were severely limited on the scope of ‘innovative’ new services which they could launch because they were almost entirely dependent on their infrastructure suppliers – the likes of Ericsson, Nokia Siemens and Alcatel- Lucent, to implement such services. Typical IN (Intelligent Network) back-ends were effectively proprietary but Windle claims the solutions his company’s software can provide are truly ‘Open’. Consequently, operators can utilise OpenCloud’s ‘Open’ platform to launch services which directly compete against OTT (Over-The-Top) providers – like Skype (and Apple with Facetime). Continue reading

The result is privateStack – a licensable enterprise version of its industry-leading mobile HTML5 app development and cloud services stack. appMobi CEO, Dave Kennedy, claimed, “While the consumer market for apps has skyrocketed along with explosive smartphone and tablet sales over the past few years, enterprises and government agencies who wanted to develop mobile apps with data security and deployment control have had no real way to do so.” Continue reading
GoMo discovers app store inside app store
Rating: box Gallery feature has hidden benefits
Completely by accident, GoMobile News chanced upon an app store within an app store which could help enterprise iOS users surmount the daunting evaluation and selection process which they currently face. We were chatting with Christopher Yeh, who is vice president for box‘s Platform product. What we were really there to discuss is how box has ended up being at the meeting point of three current trends in mobile: – cloud, BYOD, and native mobile apps. However, whilst demonstrating the product, Yeh showed GoMobile News, the box app’s Gallery facility. In this case, it was running on an Apple iPad tablet – but the same facility applies to other mobile OS version. Using Gallery, you can browse apps which box has selected and then download (and pay for them) via Apple’s iTunes App Store. Continue reading

This publication is now in its 12th year and has rapidly established itself as something of a Bible for the mobile industry – although in effect its remit covers the entire digital economy. With mobile cloud storage the problem with BYOD is LLYOD
Rating: TeamDrive reckons it has the secure answer

In fact, the system is so secure that certain governments (the USA, Saudi Arabia, etc) might get scared of their citizens using it. Continue reading
Industry reacts positively to Apple’s iPad 3 launch
Rating: Rumours of iPad mini prove false, though
It wasn’t exactly a well-kept secret. However, the industry’s reaction to Apple’s launch of the iPad 3 yesterday [March 7th 2012] has been pretty positive. According to Mike Anderson, CEO with Chelsea Apps Factory, “The new device is also certainly going to be a shot in the arm for the apps business.” Mark Watson, an evp for technology and engineering with Antenna, observed, “The apps that Apple demonstrated as part of their announcement as well as the improved integration of services like iCloud suggest that this device is going to reinforce Apple’s position as first-choice tablet and market leader.” Significantly, Apple still needs to do more Fred Huet, md with Greenwich Consulting, thinks. “While the iCloud is a good offering, further functionality is needed in order to up Apple’s game against the likes of Google and Amazon,” he argued. Lynnette Prigmore, head of product with Proporta, also praised the hardware. “We’re particularly excited to see the much awaited 4G LTE feature with a 9 hour battery life,” she claimed. That’s about as secure as you can get.
