Mobile interaction service provider, tyntec, is predicting that the market for Application to Person (A2P) messaging is on the verge of exploding. In particular it says that the internet industry – and Silicon Valley internet giants in particular, extending email and social networking services with SMS especially into emerging markets. tyntec says that app developers and marketers are driving demand for A2P messaging, as they are increasingly looking at push messaging and SMS to drive downloads, engagement and to reactivate customers. Major insights into European mobile app market are being offered in the the latest madreport from madvertise – one of the largest mobile audience targeting platforms in Europe. Key findings include the fact that there are more than three times the amount of iPhone apps available to download compared to the iPad. That’s despite the fact that over 100 million iPads have been sold to date, with iPhone sales coming in only a fraction higher at 108 million. A new mobile phone using discarded Nokia software is to be unveiled next month by a group of ex-employees capitalising on patent violation fears elsewhere. With the feud over design and intellectual property rights between Apple and Samsung showing no signs of abating, and growing concern it could spill over into Android phones, the former Nokia executives and engineers believe the time has never been better for an alternative operating system. Their Finnish start-up business, Jolla, has already raised $258 million with the help of unnamed partners said to include a telecom operator, chip manufacturer as well as device and component firms. An enhanced version of the Netswipe mobile Software Development Kit (SDK) – now with Boost 20/20, has just been released by online payment specialist, Jumio. Adding this payment functionality to an app’s checkout process can drive a revenue boost of at least 20 per cent, the company claims. All while taking only about 20 minutes to implement. The good news is that Jumio has allocated $5 million in free scans for qualifying developer plus integration of the SDK is free. The app enables merchants to scan a credit card in five seconds rather than attempting key entry on their mobile devices which normally takes an average of 50 seconds. This significantly reduces customer drop-off at this critical point in the purchase process, Jumio says. Continue reading

Taiwanese maker’s cap drops by more than half this year

Following in the footsteps of RIM and Nokia, Taiwan’s HTC is the latest phone maker to hit the decks with its shares sinking to a new low and knocking around $1 billion off its market value. Failure to fend off Samsung and Apple is, again, the reason. Whereas just two years ago HTC was riding the crest of the wave as the first to make handsets powered by Google’s Android OS, it is now witnessesing a reversal of fortunes with its second-quarter revenues down by over a quarter and indications of more trouble ahead, including an expected halving of its revenues in the current quarter.
