Affiliate Window shares its mobile ad sales stats
Rating: Some very interesting info buried in its report
Affiliate Window, which matches content publishers with advertisers, has just released its latest mobile and m-commerce figures from June [2012]. They show how mobile is faring against traditional sales through the desktop. The report shows that 12.63 per cent of Affiliate Window ‘s traffic is now mobile – that drops to 7.36 per cent if tablet traffic is removed. 8.26 per cent of all sales were through mobile devices (including tablets) or 3.32 per cent of sales if tablets are removed. Perhaps the most interesting figure is that mobile traffic is converting at 2.84 per cent. The report which you can download from here shows how that conversion rate compares by device. The iPad is by far the leader. Continue reading
Asda Mobile finds Brit men phone from the loo
Rating: Coins the terms throne call
Asda Mobile seems to think that the discovery that one in five men admit to regularly using their phones whilst in the smallest room [bathroom] is hot news. Well, the term ‘throne calls’ might be new but long standing mobile/cellular observers like GoMobile News have know of this habit for a very long time. Indeed, we remember such research coming out in WAP’s heyday [2000]. Better still, when BT more recently trialled mobile TV near to its research centre at Martlesham, it did its best to surpress the discovery that traillists regular watch TV on their smartphones whilst in the bathroom. There’s no electricity in the loo so it is an ideal solution. Asda’s research comes with some other equally long suspected conclusions, but at least the MVNOs has quantified it for us all with its poll. Continue reading
Talking on smartphones comes fifth says O2
Rating: Operators will have to maximise data revenuea s as result
Reseach specially commissioned by the UK Mobile operator, O2, has confirmed what most observers in the mobile/cellular industry have long suspected. Namely, that making voice calls is no longer the primary use consumers make of their smartphones. In fact, talking on the mobile phone came in as the fifth most popular activity on a smartphone. More worrying is that texting came seventh behind checking emails at sixth. This research – entitled ‘All About You’, was actually designed to promote Samsung’s extremely popular Samsung Galaxy SIII Android. However, it indicates how heavily mobile network operators will become on maximising the revenues they derive from data services. Continue reading
Opera report highlights cost of data roaming
Rating: Its tables provide hard stats for data in 9 countries
Roaming charges are making all the headlines at the moment. There are apocryphal tales of consumers spending two weeks data roaming abroad and getting a bill that takes two months to pay off. Just loading your own Facebook home page ten times can cost more than $50.00 – depending on home country and operator plan, of course. So Opera Software decided to take a close look at data roaming charges in the latest (May 2012) edition of its State of the Mobile Web Report. One of the report’s more surprising findings was that mobile users in two of the most advanced telecom nations on the world- Japan and the United Sates, are among those charged the most for data roaming. Naturally, the report shows how much you would save if you switch over to Opera’s Mini browser. Continue reading
IDATE launches latest DigitalWorld Yearbook
Rating: It’s an industry Bible and Goldmine of useful stats rolled into one
GoMobile News had the pleasure of attending the launch of the DigiWorld Yearbook 2012 in London. This publication is now in its 12th year and has rapidly established itself as something of a Bible for the mobile industry – although in effect its remit covers the entire digital economy. What we took away from this launch was the publication’s conclusion that there are three big game changers at work within the cellular industry: – mobile everywhere; content in the cloud; and big data. The launch was accompanies by a keynote speech from Olaf Swantee, CEO, Everything Everywhere. He used the opportunity to make an impassioned plea for his company to be able to roll out 4G in the 1800 MHz spectrum. Continue reading
BCS searches for the Innovative Mobile App of The Year
Rating: Ernest institution wakes up to power of the mobile app
The BCS ( formerly the British Computer Society), which is the Chartered Institute for IT, has begun its search for the most Innovative Mobile App of 2012 as it launches this year’s UK IT Industry Awards, in conjunction with Incisive’s Computing magazine. You’d better huryy, however, because the closing date for entries is 5pm on Friday July 6th [2012]. Judges are looking for mobile apps that run on mobile phones or other devices with built-in 3G or 4G capability. These apps should show an innovative use of the technology in the phones, and possibly of on-line services. They should be publically available – they can be either free or paid-for. Continue reading
Youngsters want SMS integrated into social networks
Rating: Survey for tyntec shows strong potentilal for OTT services, too
A Pan-Atlantic survey carried out for mobile interaction specialist, tyntec, has found that UK youngsters embrace mobile social networking more than US counterparts. The survey -conducted by YouGov – reveals that 66 per cent percent of UK mobile users aged between 16-24 check Facebook and Twitter on the go daily, as opposed to just 37 per cent percent of Americans. The poll of 2,000 UK/US smartphone users show the so-called ‘millenial’ demographic in the UK is more advanced when it comes to using emerging cloud-based mobile services. Continue reading
Consumers still confused over mobile brands
Rating: is Android a phone maker, a model of device or a market?
Some very interesting research into mobile brands has been carried out by Roxy Palace, which develops games across all mobile OS platforms. But then the company would have to because it is actually behind mobile casinos. Now, we’re not quite sure where Roxy was trying to go with its research but in doing so it has come up with some interesting research into mobile brands. This is a good example: – ten per cent of respondents were able to name Research In Motion (RIM) as makers of the BlackBerry as opposed to 64 per cent who thought Blackberry was the manufacturer of mobile phones rather than the model name. Actually, that’s good going. Continue reading
GoMo networks with four industry gurus at MACH Insights
Rating: Brøgger, Bubly, Lewis and McNiece
One of the key benefits of attending MACH Insights 2012 here in Prague was meeting up and speaking to the analysts who attend this event. Best value for money must surely be Dean Bubley from Disruptive Analysis who always came up with incisive questions. Unlike Alun Lewis from Silicon2Synapse, however, Bubly didn’t speak or chair a Panel Discussion. So it was left to Susan McNiece from Software Market Insight to provide us all with some very interesting stats for public consumption. Her major contribution was to introduce ARPA as a term which is apparently the successor to ARPU. Continue reading
Only 14% of apps address enterprise needs
Rating: research2guidance looks at ‘off the shelf’ apps
The number of enterprise-relevant apps has doubled from 100,000 to 200,000 over the past 12 months (Q1 2011 to Q1 2012), according to research2guidance. However, of those 200,000 in the stores, only 14 per cent truly address core enterprise needs, the company claims in its ‘Enterprise Mobile App Status Report 2012′. ” What we see today is just the tip of the iceberg. There will definitely be a market for mobilising core enterprise functions, like sales and services,” says Ralf-Gordon Jahns, research director with research2guidance. Companies are in creasingly deploying mobile apps to connect to partners and employees following the successful adoption of customer-focused mobile apps, the report argues. Continue reading

Core differentiator for BlackBerries is now a commodity says Analysys Mason
Rating: The smartphone’s keyboard isn’t key any more
Speculation is rife following the announcement that BlackBerry’s owner – RIM, has called in bankers to conduct a strategic review. This is what RIM’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, actually said … “After the release of our year-end financial results, we engaged JP Morgan Securities and RBC Capital Markets to assist the company and our board of directors in reviewing RIM’s business and financial performance.” He also stressed that, “We will continue to spend and hire in key areas such as those associated with the launch of BlackBerry 10, and those tied to the growth of our application developer community.” However, according to Analysys Mason, the problem lies with the fact that smartphone users now care less about having a keyboard and more about being able to play back media content. NFC retail payments set to explode, says Juniper
Rating: 1 in 4 mobile users will pay in-store using NFC
By 2017, over one four 4 of Western European and USA mobile phone users will use an NFC-enabled mobile phone to pay for goods in-store, claims Juniper Research. GoMobile News finds this a very interesting prediction given that less than two per cent of users will be paying by NFC this year [ 2012]. Where are all the NFC-enabled handsets going to come from? Apple still doesn’t offer one. Anyway, the report entitled ‘NFC Mobile Payments & Retail Marketing: Business Models & Forecasts 2012-2017‘ covers the key advantages to NFC; and customer care concerns. It also argues that mobile network operators will be able to offset declining ARPU as they commit to NFC-based payment projects. Continue reading
Guest Post: How to maximise m-commerce potential
Phil McGriskin, chief product officer with WorldPay, looks at how retailers can best approach implementing a mobile payments channel
m-commerce has been hotly tipped as the next major advance in retail and payments for about the last six years, but only recently have we seen merchants finding ways to make it into a stable revenue stream. The ubiquity of mobile devices in our day-to-day lives has essentially changed consumers’ shopping behaviour so that they can browse and buy through their devices anytime, anywhere. Coupled with technological advances, never has the opportunity for mobile been so great. Continue reading
Brands ignoring mobile search at their peril says Mobileweb
Rating: A cross device mobile strategy is also key, apparently
According to the Mobileweb Company, mobile websites that it operates typically see uplift in mobile site traffic of more than 90 per cent. That’s because they are fully optimised for mobile search discovery, the company claims. Whilst Mobileweb’s own recently announced research shows that iPhone users grab the lion’s share of mobile web access (55.7 per cent), the company still urges brands to adopt a cross device mobile strategy. Less than 10 per cent of potential customers have an iPhone. Continue reading
