In Bev utilises mobile technology again – this time with NFC
Rating: High tech poster for Beck Vier beer found in Boys Room
Re-enforcing our assertion that in the UK the drinks industry is leading the way when it comes to utilising mobile technology for product marketing and promotions, GoMobile News came across another mobile friendly poster. We alluded to this in a previous story here we spotted this particular promotional poster for Beck Vier lager in the Boys room at the Slug & Lettuce pub at Clapham Junction [London]. We notice that. once again, it is In Bev, the brewer, behind the promotion as was the case with the Greene King/Stella promotion we mentioned here. This time the poster not only used a QR code but it also employed an NFC chip. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get the NFC chip to work. Continue reading →
NeoMedia lands its first brand licensee – Kraft Foods
Rating: Proves that QR codes are far from dead
Although NFC (Near Field Communication) might be the proximity technology of the moment, QR codes are far from dead. NeoMedia Technologies which now describes itself as a QR code pioneer (having once fought tooth and nail to keep calling them 2D barcodes), has finally landed its first brand licensee – Kraft Foods Group. In the UK, Kraft is probably best known for taking over Cadburys, the chocolate producer. NeoMedia has apparently awarded Kraft a worldwide, non-exclusive license to NeoMedia’s patents related to mobile barcode resolution. In exchange, Kraft has selected NeoMedia as an approved vendor for mobile barcode management solutions. Continue reading →

NeoMedia signs up two more firms to its QR patents
Rating: CodeBroker and Paperlinks come onboard
It seems the mobile world is gradually coming to accept that in order to play in the QR space they are going to have to pay the IPR owners. Hence NeoMedia has just announced that it has added two new patent licensees to mobile barcode patent family. The latest to sing on the dotted line are Paperlinks and CodeBroker. Neither company is exactly high profile but NeoMedia loves to point out that Microsoft became a licensee last month [August 2012] here. Continue reading →
NeoMedia adds new recruit for core products
Rating: Hires Mark Lanphear hot on heels of Microsoft coup
Hot on the heels of its announcement that the company had landed Microsoft as a licensee (and how many others will now follow suite?), NeoMedia Technologies, has gone on the head hunt. It has just snaffled Mark Lanphear as its new vp for sales in North America. “To be joining an industry stalwart like NeoMedia at such a positive time for QR codes is very exciting for me,” Mark Lanphear commented. “NeoMedia is a company focused on innovation and I look forward to helping drive NeoMedia’s continued success,” he added. NeoMedia bags Microsoft as an IP licensee
Rating: Might be a death knell for the Microsoft Tag
Regular GoMobile News readers have always urged mobile barcode speciallist, NeoMedia Technologies, to take full advantage of its IP portfolio. This now consists of over 74 patents awarded and pending worldwide. The latest milestone is that the company has now granted worldwide rights to license its patent portfolio to none other than Microsoft itself. Neither side seem to mention the fact, but this is a major triumph for QR code technology because Microsoft itself was desperately trying to push a rival technology in the shape of the Microsoft Tag. Guest Post: QR versus AR – not simply a case of black or white
by Laura Marriott, CEO with NeoMedia Technologies
Much has been written on the topic of the competition between QR and Augmented Reality (see here) for share of mobile marketing budgets. Put bluntly, many believe Augmented Reality (AR) will circumvent QR’s current market share as advertisers flock to the rich experience of AR. The issue, however, is not that black and white. The benefits of QR codes have been well publicised. In effect, a single code can act as a portal to a branded online world, helping to maximise media spend, establish dialogue with the consumer and make the user experience more holistic and media rich. While QR codes provide a real-time source of data for marketers to help shape existing and future marketing programs, they also provide consumers with a range of value-added information and incentives about brands, retailers and their products. 4.5 million Brits regularly scan QR codes
Rating: Marketers need to do more than simply push content via QR codes
Currently in the UK over half of smartphone users claim to use their phone in some way when out shopping, according to Ofcom. Furthermore, over a fifth of shoppers (21 per cent) are using QR bar code scanning to get more information on the products they are buying. Presently, smartphone penetration in the UK is set at 51.3 per cent which equates to 23 million Brits equipped with smartphones. Given that a fifth of these are regularly using QR code technology, this equates to over 4.5 million people in the UK using QR codes while they shop. The implications of this should not be overlooked by the retail industry. Continue reading →
ScanLife enters tech spat with logo-centric QR codes
Rating: Even support colour like Microsoft Tag
Probably because it was feeling a little bit left out, ScanLife (Scanbuy) has decided to enter the current spat over 2D barcode technology. Avid readers may recall that SpyderLynx has just announced it has received a patent for its SnapTag technology. See here. One of the things which SpyderLynx claims SnapTag can offer is “the only logo-centric mobile activation tool in the marketplace today.” (See here). So what has ScanLife just done? Only gone and sent GoMobile News examples of its latest service for customers. Yessiree, the ability to embed logos into various 2D codes including QR codes. If that isn’t throwing the gauntlet down, then what is? Continue reading →
The plot thickens on the NeoMedia vs SpyderLynk spat
Rating: Battle of the US patents over QR codes warms up
This simply cannot be a co-incidence. On exactly the same day [April 10th 2012] that QR/3D barcode specialist – NeoMedia Technologies announced that it is suing a rival firm, the company in question – SpyderLynk declares that it has finally received a patent on its own technology. Curiously, NeoMedia originally claimed that it was suing SpyderLynk over three different patents. Mysteriously, after an intervention by NeoMedia’s Press relations people, GoMobile News agreed to pull any references to NeoMedia’s 7,765,126 patent which was originally mentioned. Continue reading →
NeoMedia sues SpyderLynx as scanning figures rise
Rating: W7 Mango users bottom of scanning list
As mobile barcode scanning expert, NeoMedia Technologies, announced its performance figures for Q1 2012, the company also let slip that it had started another law suit over its patent portfolio. This time the supplier on the wrong end of NeoMedia’s lawyers is SpyderLynx. That’s interesting because SpyderLynx itself is trying to patent the use of embedding a log into a QR code. See our previous story here. For the lawyers amongst our readership, we decided to publish NeoMedia’s Press release on the who legal action bit here. Meanwhile, NeoMedia is staking its claim to be the leading purveyor of QR code scanning software. It says that 20 million handsets use its NeoReader barcode scanning service worldwide (representing 227 countries). Significantly, Android smartphones account for the majority use of the NeoReader app and 56 per cent of all scans. Continue reading →
Three quick fire questions with the CEO of NeoMedia Laura Marriott on the upheld validity of the Neom Mobile Barcode Patents
Friends, Romans, barcode enthusiasts. Something big happened last week. Yes. We all know that Cheryl Cole got sacked from some mega US TV series; but that is not the HUGE news I am talking about!
The HUGE news is that NeoMedia’s patents were re-examined by the Patent authorities in the US. This is after a long and tiresome legal battle (one of many in NeoMedia’s history) and low and behold they have been upheld.

NeoMedia White Paper on the Future of Mobile Coupons gets it wrong before it gets it right
NeoMedia sent out a press release last week pushing a new white paper called The Future of Mobile Couponing. Now, in general terms, this is a good thing. NeoMedia is the interesting but rather long running company that has heralded the success of mobile barcodes for nearly a decade.

NeoMedia’s crystal ball misses eBay
Rating: The mists are clearing and we see a licence fee emerging
So much for NeoMedia‘s Crystal ball. The company recently outlined what 2011 has in store for 2D mobile barcodes. Curiously, however, there was absolutely no mention of eBay which is strange given that news leaked out a mere two days after its predictions that eBay has just licensed a whole bunch of NeoMedia’s patents. The burning question, therefore, is why has eBay suddenly decided to take out such options? The answer is that nobody really seems to know. Continue reading →

NeoMedia, one of the major IP holders in the mobile barcoding world, is undergoing a change in leadership today. Iain McCready has been CEO of the company during a controversial period, and has announced he will step down from the position to pursue other interests. Current NeoMedia Board member and acting CMO Laura Marriot will be taking over the position. Continue reading →
