order online for €399 Sacked Nokia workers launch own smartphone using ditched technology

Meego never given a fair chance, they say, as new op rises from the ashes

A group of ex-Nokia workers who believe the Finnish manufacturer was wrong to ditch its Meego operating system have unveiled their own smartphone using the abandoned technology. The workers, who lost their jobs after Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, opted for Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, set up their own company called Jolla soon afterwards and yesterday, with Meego now reborn as Sailfish, launched their first smartphone. BBM on BlackBerry BlackBerry opens up BBM to Android & iOS

No mention of WP8 version, though

In a typical if-you-cant-beat-em-join-em approach, BlackBerry has just announced plans to make its IMS facility BlackBerry Messenger BBM available to iOS and Android users. That is, of course, if Apple and Google allow BlackBerry to upload the apps to their resxpecitive app stores. There’s no mention of a Windows Phone 8 (WP8) client, of course. One UK publication described BBM as the “rioters’ texting toool” because BBM proved to be the IMS of choice amongst London rioters. Other observers take the view that WhatsApp is likely to have the most to lose. However, GoMo News believes that it’s the mobile operators who are most in danger as a universal BBM could seriously dent their SMS revenues. Continue reading

NFC-MWC GoMo still puzzled by NFC’s interworking

NFC technology obviously still in its early days

Sadly, GoMo News has been around for so long that we can recall Bluetooth – which most smartphone users take for granted, being in its early days. We firmly believe that NFC (Near Field Communication) is still in its early days presently. Particularly judging from our recent experience playing [testing] with two Sony handsets and the Sony Xperia Z tablet. We were particularly impressed with Sony’s pledge on its support for NFC. It claims, “No other consumer electronics company is bringing as many NFC-enabled products to market.” Shame NFC doesn’t work perfectly, then. Continue reading

oyster on the go development team GoMo tries to put Oyster onto its Android RAZR HD

Rating: It has support for NFC but the app is still missing

One of the facilities built into our sparking new Motorola RAZR HD is – of course, the ability to support NFC (Near Field Communication). NFC is a bit like Bluetooth in that it is a cellular related wireless technology that has plenty of applications. Nokia has utilised NFC, for example, to permit the wireless exchange of business cards just by tapping two handsets together. There’s a facility called Android Beam built into the Android OS to facilitate just that sort of thing. But NFC is most heavily associated with contactless payments. And being London based, GoMo News‘ main exposure to contactless payments is via the Oyster card for transport payments. So is there a way of putting Oyster on the RAZR? Nope. The app is still missing and the biggest drawback is a lack of a mobile wallet. Maybe Weve will be able to sort that out. Continue reading

Never mind the processor, feel the S4′s UI

Rating: Buried treasure in its e-commerce features, too

Although there is a great temptation to concentrate on the hardware specifications of a flagship smartphone such as Samsung’s Galaxy S4 announced last night [March 14th 2013], the multiple benefits buried in the handsets UI [user Interface] should prove far more important in the long run. GoMo News might be out on a limb with this one but we feel that the inherent support for NFC [Near Field Communication] in the S4 will prove far more of Apple’s undoing than any screen size or the number of its processor cores. Continue reading

imagine_logo Inspired platform combines high tech and premium content

Rating: Incorporates QR codes, Wi-fi, and AR

That’s because it claims to have merged emerging technology solutions – such as QR codes, Wi-fi, and augmented reality (AR) and premium publisher inventory into a single platform. The company claims the platform has been designed to simplify the process of running mobile campaigns. Plus it should help address a fragmented ecosystem by offering an open and self-service tool which focuses on end user experience. Continue reading

GoMo’s own NFC experience experience @ MWC

Rating: It doesn’t look too good, captain

The GSMA (which organises the Mobile World Congress (MWC) show here in Barcelona) has gone to great lengths to help the spread of NFC technology here in Barcelona. The whole objective is to make life a whole lot simpler thanks to the use of ‘contactless’ technology in the shape of NFC (Near Field Communication). We’re not contactless refuseniks here at GoMobile Towers – because we happily use an Oyster RF card to get around London’s transportation system. However, we couldn’t see much benefit from our use of NFC in Barcelona. Continue reading
