Nokia credit rating takes another knocking
Is it Fin?
Beleaguered handset maker Nokia has been further downgraded by rating agency Fitch, giving it a BB- score and putting its credit worthiness a step closer to junk status. The rating agency says it’s not persuaded that Nokia can pull out of its revenue nosedive. Continue reading
BYOD is not popular with most UK organisations McAfee reveals
Rating: Smartphones still not seen as proper business tools
There has been a great deal of buzz around ‘Bring-Your-Own-Device’ (BYOD) schemes as some suppliers and observers would have us think. These facts emerged from a recent survey of 100 IT professionals from UK organisations, carried out by security specialist – McAfee. We know that BOYD is popular with employees – asked if their users valued certain devices over others, 89 per cent of those surveyed claimed that this was the case. However, these IT professionals are pretty scared of letting mobile devices into their environment. Continue reading
Struggling Nokia offers flagship mobile for just $49.99
The Chancer … The phone ain’t necessarily junk, but the company’s share price is
Finnish manufacturer Nokia may have slashed the cost of flagship Lumia 900 smartphone to just $49.99 (£32) in bid to stem losses, but its share price is still in freefall. From around $7 last November the stock has fallen to a mere $1.84 on Friday at close of play on Nasdaq. Continue reading
Apple losing its crown to Samsung in smartphone stakes
Rating: Data from uSwitch simply confirming obvious trend
Without Steve Jobs, it was inevitable that Apple would lose some of its shine. The investable outcome has been that attention has focussed on Samsung’s Samsung Galaxy S III instead. The latest Mobile Tracker data from uSwitch.com (in the UK) simply confirms this. Samsung’s flagship handset is continuing its reign at the head of the company’s mobile handset chart. Although these figures shouldn’t be taken as Gospel [100 per cent accurate], they do show some very interesting trends. In particular that Nokia’s Windows Phone (W7 Mango), the Lumia 800, has re-entered the chart at number eight. That puts it above the two ageing iPhone (4 and 3GS ) models. The aura of invincibility which Apple has previously enjoyed in the mobile/cellular market has now been pricked. Continue reading
Bet2Go revises its mobile offering to support WP7
Rating:
Just in time for the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 8th 2012, Bet2Go has launched an all-new version of its app for smartphones. Not only has the UI been improved but the company claims it is quicker to bet with this new release. The most impressive part about this announcement is that Bet2Go has trawled its support database and discovered that this latest release covers a previous problem GoMobile News encountered with this app. Namely that it wouldn’t work on a Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango) handset (the Nokia Lumia 800). We can confirm that the ‘other smartphones’ version of the app is compatible with W7 Mango. Continue reading
Rumours surface that RIM may split itself in two
Rating: Google, Facebook, Microsoft all potential buyers
The British Sunday Times newspaper has published rumours that Research in Motion (RIM) may well be considering splitting itself into two separate parts. It’s a highly believable plan considering another former leading handset vendor, Motorola, did actually divide itself into two divisions. In this case, according to the newspaper, RIM would hive of the handset manufacturing part from its secure network operations service. The Sunday Times didn’t name its sources but there’s a very strong hint that such a plan could have been dreamed up by JP Morgan and Capital Markets, the two investment banks called in by new RIM CEO, Thorsten Heins. Possible buyers mentioned include Facebook, Google and even Microsoft. Continue reading

Rating: Nokia Lumia range not fully upgradeable from W7 Mango
The much-anticipated Windows Phone 8 (WP8 Apollo) is finally here and its features were shown yesterday [June 20th 2012] at the Microsoft Phone Developer Summit. This news platform is equipped with the right tools to satisfy the market’s appetite for innovation, according to Malik Saadi, principal analyst with Informa Telecoms & Media. It presents a challenge to rivals like the ageing Apple iOS. Although the existing Windows Phone 7 (WP7) will be upgraded to include some high-level features of WP8, the true capabilities of this platform will only sparkle when new enabled devices are launched. Nokia disposes of one of its remaining profitable bits – Vertu
Rating: Microsoft probably aiming to do a Sendo on Nokia
What kind of madness is this? Nokia is in dire straights – nobody disputes that. It has just been forced to announce that another 10,000 jobs will have to go at Nokia. The reason is blatantly obvious. Nokia is in the business of making mobile phones. What does the market demand at the moment? Android handsets – that’s what people want. Let’s face it, there’s no way in the world that Apple is going to licence iOS to Nokia which is the only other way out.Android is the only way. So how does the company react? Offer Android handsets? No, it only decides to sell its stake in one of the last and only really profitable parts of its business – luxury handset vendor, Vertu. Continue reading
Nokia to acquire staff and technologies from imaging specialist, Scalado
Rating: Lund base will become Nokia’s imaging software R&D centre
In a very interesting development in the production of imaging software for smartphones, Nokia has announced its intention to acquire Swedish software developers, Scalado. The terms of the transaction are confidential but it is clear that Nokia intends to centre its imaging software R&D around Scalado’s base in Lund. Not only will Nokia acquire Scalado’s technologies and intellectual property but it will also take on the company’s people, too. Continue reading
Consumers still confused over mobile brands
Rating: is Android a phone maker, a model of device or a market?
Some very interesting research into mobile brands has been carried out by Roxy Palace, which develops games across all mobile OS platforms. But then the company would have to because it is actually behind mobile casinos. Now, we’re not quite sure where Roxy was trying to go with its research but in doing so it has come up with some interesting research into mobile brands. This is a good example: – ten per cent of respondents were able to name Research In Motion (RIM) as makers of the BlackBerry as opposed to 64 per cent who thought Blackberry was the manufacturer of mobile phones rather than the model name. Actually, that’s good going. Continue reading
Mobile payments support is the Galaxy s3′s killer feature
Rating: Never mind the processor speed and the screen size
Tomorrow [May 29th 2012], is the official release date for the Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone in Europe and ten other cities worldwide including Tokyo and Dubai. There have already been glowing revues and the general consensus is that this is the handset which will really take the battle to Apple and its iconic iPhone range. Many pundits seem to overlook the fact that Samsung has already stolen the mantle of the leading vendor of mobile phones from Nokia. So why shouldn’t the Galaxy S3 trounce the iPhone because Samsung obviously knows what it is doing in the mobile phone business. Making phones that people actually want helps a lot. However, GoMobile News is with Fred Huet, founder of Greenwich Consulting, who points out that mobile payments is Apple’s Achilles heel. Continue reading
A long-winded way of transferring contacts from a dead iPhone
Rating: Spin-off from hot tip in the Sunday Times
Recently, GoMobile News reading one of the excellent technical answers to a reader’s question in the UK’s SundayTimes Don’t Panic section, when it struck us that we’d failed to report on our solution for a very similar problem. The best way to describe our answer would be as an “extremely long-winded approach to transfering contacts from a dead iPhone to another iPhone or regular smartphone device.” But this solution does actually work. Nevertheless, both problems stem from how Apple’s iTunes PC software has been storing its data. In a nutshell, though, we took an iPhone with a completely illegible screen and no Home button and managed to transfer the handset’s contacts to a BlackBerry via an old Nokia. Continue reading

Brands ignoring mobile search at their peril says Mobileweb
Rating: A cross device mobile strategy is also key, apparently
According to the Mobileweb Company, mobile websites that it operates typically see uplift in mobile site traffic of more than 90 per cent. That’s because they are fully optimised for mobile search discovery, the company claims. Whilst Mobileweb’s own recently announced research shows that iPhone users grab the lion’s share of mobile web access (55.7 per cent), the company still urges brands to adopt a cross device mobile strategy. Less than 10 per cent of potential customers have an iPhone. Continue reading
