August 2nd 2012. Canalys has published its final Q2 2012 country-level shipment estimates to clients. Results show that China saw phenomenal growth of 199% year-on-year and 32% over the previous quarter. In total, more than 42 million smart phones were shipped into the channel in China in Q2 2012, representing the second consecutive quarter of record breaking volumes in a single country market. Samsung acquires CSR’s​ handset R&D for $31​0 million

Ex-CEO Mike Lazaridis testifies, jury awards $147 million in damages

The US Federal District Court of Northern California found Canadian company Research in Motion (RIM) guilty on Friday 13th July 2012, by unanimous jury verdict, of infringing Mformation Technologies‘ patent related to wireless mobile device management. The software found to infringe Mformation’s patent is RIM’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), used by corporate enterprise customers to manage and secure their BlackBerry devices. The court awarded Mformation $147.2 million dollars in damages based on past sales of BES-connected BlackBerry smartphones in the USA from late 2008, when the lawsuit was filed, through to the trial date. This award does not include future royalties, past and future US government sales, or past and future non-US sales. Continue reading
