Do eco-phones sell? Another “green” mobile, from Sony Ericsson and Windows Mobile

picture-2Making things ecologically sound has found a place for itself in the marketing lexicon. Calling something “green” or “eco-friendly” has a certain cache for a certain audience - and mobile manufacturers have not resisted the pull. The latest eco-phone to hit the market comes from Sony Ericsson… but the Aspen is interestingly different because it’s an enterprise device, aimed at business customers.

The XPERIA 10 is unveiled - the first Android device to come from Sony Ericsson. There are two main thrusts to the device, that I can see. First, it is very much aiming for a sort of Google Experience feel. It has a set of home-developed, Sony Ericsson owned applications on the device that run over the open Android OS (although it has plenty of Google apps as well). And second, with a set of open APIs and the upcoming Web 2.0 event in New York, it is aiming at attracting a community of developers.

That it is named after a French fashion magazine should tell you a lot about this phone. Along with regular mobile phone features, Sony Ericsson is marketing it as a fashion accessory, comparable to jewelry or sunglasses.

Sony Ericsson has today opened its application submission site, http://submit.sonyericsson.com/, to all comers. The apps will be sold over the PlayNow arena, and the submission process is completely free. Initially only apps for Java and Symbian devices will be accepted, but there should be more OS support later in the year.

Sony Ericsson has announced that it will be selling mobile applications through PlayNow Arena, its mobile content platform. I usually wince every time a new app store gets jammed onto the market, but Sony has done something interesting: it has basically outsourced its entire app outfit to independent company GetJar.

Mobile company Sony Ericsson loses another 2,000 jobs

Sony Ericsson today announced that it has to cut another 2,000 jobs in 2009 to make up for a €400m loss in Q1 2009. This comes after it had already announced 2000 redundancies.

Sony Ericsson announced today that low consumer demand is having a bad effect on sales and income. It also attributed poor sales to destocking - the practice of retailers to drop stock in response to low consumer spending.

Sony invests in mobile devices during economic downturn

At a news conference in Tokyo, Sony CEO Howard Stringer said that mobile devices would be a focus for dealing with the poor economic conditions around the world.
Stringer said “we will tap our unique strengths in gaming, entertainment, digital imaging and telephony to fast track a line-up of next-generation mobile devices”

Video ringtone providers Vringo announced today that its app is being pre-linked on Sony Ericsson’s Fun & Downloads portal. A link to the service will be prominently displayed in all Walkman phone’s Web browsers.
