Yahoo keeps mobile search in the spotlight as it boots out Google from O2

Today, Yahoo! and O2 Germany announce and launch an exclusive, multi-year mobile search partnership, with Yahoo! providing the search services on O2’s mobile portals, displacing Google as their search partner of choice. Additionally, as part of the deal, O2’s portals will include links to some of Yahoo!’s most popular mobile properties including Yahoo!’s new mobile homepage, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Weather, Yahoo! Finance, Flickr, Yahoo! Eurosport and more.

We sat down with Keith Saft, Director of Core Mobile Consumer Products at Yahoo! who took us through some of the developments from the company today… although we did wander off topic and discuss mobile finance and problems with getting Yahoo! homepage on different OS platforms.

Yahoo! sexes up the mobile homepage but why isnt it enough?

Europe is a vital, exciting and high-value market for mobile advertising. Over the past year AdMob has strengthened its presence in the UK; BuzzCity has set up in Paris; Adfonic has launched in the UK. On top of that 3rd Screen, Nokia Ads and Yahoo are all strategically placed in London, Berlin or Hamburg to capture Europe.

If you look at Google’s domination in the search space; the deal between Microsoft and Yahoo! looks like necessary action. It will be approved because it has to be. Google is a cartel in the online world and more completion and choice is necessary.

microyahooThe on-again-off-again relationship between Yahoo! and Microsoft has finally produced a 10-year agreement. The two companies are joining forces for a new Web search service targeted at both users and advertisers. Effectively, Microsoft will be taking over the actual search side of things, while Yahoo! handles all of the sales for search advertisers.
