Chat with Tim Haysom from OMTP on The LIMO Foundation supporting Bondi

I started off the chat with Tim Haysom today by pronouncing BONDI wrong. He corrected me and said, its like beach BONDI as mobile surfing should be fun in the sun like riding the wave.

I loved the simplicity of that and it set us up for a short chat on some new announcements today.

In short, LIMO OS is now backing the BONDI initiative. This is great news for BONDI.
But before Tim continued I asked him to refresh my memory of BONDI its goals and aims.

Bena – What is BONDI and the OMTP up to?

TIM: We have some great news today. Basically it is a new release of the BONDI initiative and we are announcing that Opera and LIMO are supporting us.

BENA: OK. But before we start tell me in a nutshell what you are doing?

TIM: Sure. The problem is that you have lots of application types on mobile and some support each other or types of mobile devices but the application market is de-fragmented.
We have identified the interfaces that will allow all web 2.0 applications to become mobile.

BENA: Sorry, if I sound silly here – but what is the benefit of this and who will benefit?

TIM: There are three groups of people that are key for BONDI

1. End users. Those that want to access all applications and can’t.

2. The developer community. You can develop on any platform and develop services regardless of the phone. Something very major for us is that LIMO has now signed up and the Linux OS will support BONDI.

3. Lastly the Internet and mobile Internet or mobile community that provide services and also OEMs or mobile operators will benefit. This is because better, stronger and more accessible applications will be available creating strong new revenue streams.

BENA: OK. So in short you have created a set of tools for developers that make applications work and made for mobile simply.

TIM: There are 12. There are 12 application templates that provide messaging features, lists for contacts and other services that developers don’t currently have. This will make developing easier and the focus can go on to trickier applications and not frustration with the basics.

BENA: This means that the eco-system benefits from a simple application mobile environment and the chance of a rich exciting app revenue generating industry.

TIM: Yes.

Bena: Super I got it!

TIM: But I was also say that following on from Purple Labs, Opera has also joined the OMTP and that is huge. Major browsers will enable BONDI opening up the market.

BENA: So you have Opera, Purple LABS and what about OS – is LIMO the only one? Are you talking to Android?

TIM: Yes. We are in constant negotiations with everyone and we will have some more announcements shortly.
