Clearwire announces 10 smaller WiMAX 4G networks

clearwireTo compliment its four existing large WiMAX deployments in the US, Clearwire has announced 10 smaller implementations to launch on September 1st. This is biggest single push we’ve seen towards Clearwires goal of having WiMAX in 80 different American markets by the end of 2010.

Eight of the ten WiMAX networks will be in Texas, with the other two coming to Idaho and Washington state. All of these networks will cover a smaller area than the current WiMAX networks in Las Vegas, Atlanta, Baltimore and Portland, Oregon.

What we think?

This announcement came two days after the August 1st launch of the Clearwire 4G+ Modem, a dongle that connects to it’s own WiMAX network. But Sprint Nextel is moving along behind Clearwire, and providing it’s own 4G services over the Clearwire network. It announced upcoming services in three of the four major cities that Clearwire operates in at the end of July. Clearwire has announced that in cities where Sprint is running 4G, the Clear 4G+ dongle will access Sprint rather than Clearwire.
