Clearwire bringing WiMAX mobile internet to Las Vegas

clearwire Clearwire announced its intention to bring WiMAX to Las Vegas earlier this year, after its Atlanta launch. Now we’ve got a date for the roll out. Las Vegas residents will have access to the 4G network from July 21st. You lucky people!

Members of the media have been invited to attend a preview of the network the day before the official launch. WiMAX networks, which Clearwire claims will reliably hit 4-6mbps, are already operational in three American cities: Portland, Atlanta and Baltimore.

What we think?

Some time ago I had been worried about the rapid spread of WiMAX and what it would mean for the coming LTE rollout. I’ve had more than one LTE supporter tell me that the technologies won’t be competitive, but will instead “compliment” one another. Hmmmmm.

But I’m really not that worried anymore. Frankly, nobody has done as much work in deploying WiMAX networks as Clearwire. And now that we’re half-way through the 2009, there are a total of four US cities on WiMAX networks. I’m not disparaging the number of people that Clearwire has brought WiMAX to, I’m just saying the scenario I had imagine where LTE would have nowhere left to roll out is entirely unlikely.
