CNN gets user generated mobile content on new WAP site

Rating: breaking news blogging, wapping and user created

CNN offered GoMo News a preview of its new mobile portal that will go live on March 1 2007.

What we think?
Pretty nifty. But three new features stand out.

1. iReport
This is citizen journalism a move away from the traditional CNN approach. Now iReport allows users to interact directly with the TV station by providing stories, pictures and videos directly from the mobile device.

This highlights that the boom in user created or generated content in the form of infotainment on citizen news stories is set to rage. GoMo News are fans of user created content but are always weary of this at a “news” scale because there is always the odd person that makes or self-creates a drama or tragedy for their own publicity… Shakespeare would agree with me.

2. Breaking News SMS Alerts
Bascially a free to sign-up breaking news alert service.

3. In the Field Blogs
CNN’s journalists will write a daily blog when out “In the Field”. This is a nifty idea that will offer a more personal experience on the mobile with key reporters.

OK. That aside – how fast, was the new WAP site?

We gave it the once over and its not bad – but its not live yet. Testing WAP when its supposed to be tested is completely different from testing WAP when its being accessed by hundreds of other CNN fans.

But basically, the graphics rendered quickly and new design is fresh.
Here’s how you get access:

Delivery to each service:
Browsable News
Text: send an SMS, ‘CNN’ at + 49 176 888 0 8888 for a link
Web: go online and enter your mobile number on www.cnnmobile.com
Mobile Browser: type www.cnnmobile.com into your mobile browser.
SMS Breaking News
Text: send an SMS, ‘CNN SMS’ to +49 176 888 0 8888
Browser: sign up via a link in the new Browsable News service on cnnmobile.com

I’ve added this site to my G-Portal page of useful (and tested!) links to good mobile sites. It’s on the URL http://da.gp so it’s very easy to enter on a standard mobile phone keypad (da.gp corresponds to the keys 32147), and it’s very hard to forget!

The page is quite UK biased, so if anyone wants to help me compile USA or other country specific landing pages, please get in touch! See http://cms.da.gp for more details.

Kevin, GoMo News is a not a place to pitch - but if you are going to do it then make sure that when I do a search for GoMo on da.gp - GoMo is at least found or recognised.
Also - I have read the site but it still isn’t clear what you do or how it works apart from it being a new url. thanks.

Bena, G-Portal’s simply a portal to sites that work well on cell phones, and it can be accessed very easily from a cell-phone. The only reason GoMo isn’t on the portal is that it has no mobile version of the site that I can find.

Kevin,
Please can you add these -both are in the top ten results if you do a search for GoMo News Mobile.

I also have several other smaller or one page sites.

Bena, I’ve added links into my main site. I’ll be adding a searchable ‘Blogs’ section to the mobile portal, and your sites will therefore soon be included there too.

If you’d like the other pages you mentioned added, please mail the URLs to me and I’ll ensure they’re added.
