Thanks for taking the time Ron to write that :-) All very interesting and much appreciated.

Why doesn't it surprise me that Japan are already using it..! Legalisation always will be I guess, technology always runs faster than the legislators.

We look forward to following your progress.

Best

Hi Rob,

Logic question. The mobile boarding pass is as I point out in the presentation connected to self-service and thus to save people and money (definetly a good business case for the mobile boarding pass). I try to get the audiance in the presentation also to see the opportunities for the mobile channel embedded into good travel services. The security check is another part in the process where there will be a check of your passport and boarding pass. In some countries legislation will demand a paper proof of checking in so where paperless distribution is one of the drivers, legislation is way behind technical developments.

Airports are happy to adopt this but its a bit of a push and pull process where Airports are facilitators for Airlines and Airlines need to implement the mobile barcode gateway into their ticketing application. So Airlines need to demand this and all are orienting on this because of the IATA 2010 deadline. Good USP of mobile barcode scan technology is that it not only reads mobile barcodes it also reads print at home boarding passes too so without deinvestment they can implement the technology right away handling both e- and m-boarding passes.

Are Airports happy? In Japan (where else) check-in and boarding gates (like we showed) with mobile boarding passes are in daily production. In Canada, Spain and the US there are pilots and I am sure we too will make a move into this market after the PTE show and a healthy interest from the visitors.

Hi Ron

Thanks for that link, very informative. One thing I would like to know is how the security aspects are being looked at..we know airports are getting like Fort Knox to get in and out of and ever increasing times to board and get through security..Do you find airport management happy for this technology?

Best

Hi Rob,

Here is the presentation I gave on the PTE Conference trying to get the Airport and Airline Audiance understand more about Mobile, Mobile Barcodes and getting started with it. The concepts I introduce in the presentation matched the experience we created togheter with Dario and his Team.

According to the following February 2008 OMA PDF:

http://www.openmobilealliance.org/documents/OMA-TP-2008-0120R01-INP_Technical_Snapshot_February_2008.pdf

Work was about to commence on formal standards.

Now that we are in the month of May, these formal standards should be close to completion.

Keep in mind that the GSMA is also working with the Mobile Codes Consortium (MC2) on the same set of mobile code standards.

Question: Where does GS1 fit in grand scheme of things with respect to the formal standards that are currently underway?

Hi Olaf

ouch, that had better be a good site or the end user is going to feel extremely "ripped" off..here in the UK we are just starting to see the main mobile carriers move to flat rate data plans but if you step out of the data plan it gets relatively expensive. Not only that but most mobile devices just do not have the screen size still, yes we have the exceptions but shouldn't we build for the average handset and not the exceptions?

I agree with your points you are making here. Not only do we have to worry about connection speed, but also the inclination of carriers to keep the price of data high as long as possible. Take Rogers for example, charging 5c per KB, so a site where no consideration is taken for mobile would cost the user easily over $10-$15 (only 200-300KB).
