IP Unity Glenayre is to unveil an application at CommunicAsia 2007 (19-22 June in Singapore) that is designed to connect video calls from 3G-enabled handsets to non-video phones. The solution, Video to Audio Connection, also includes an advertising and promotion capability.

Stan Little of IP Unity Glenayre explains, “Video to Audio Connection enables the voice portion of the video call to be received by the non-video user so the call can be completed. This new technology will increase consumer adoption of mobile video, and enable operators to secure valuable revenue, which is currently being lost by a lack of call completion.”

While waiting for the video call to be completed as a voice call, subscribers can view a video ad or carrier sponsored promotion.

“Advertising could also boost video calling,” says Mr Little. “With our new technology, operators could offer low fee or no fee mobile video calling subsidised by advertisements.”

Certainly these developments are part of the solution to boosting the uptake of video calls, but another key part is that much fatter pipes are needed for it become a mass medium and the cost needs to be transparent to the user.
