Looks like NFC could prove to be Apple’s Achilles heel
Although the iconic smartphone maker, Apple, appears absolutely determined not to support NFC, the Cupertino-based company could find itself increasingly isolated. In a small but significant move, Germany’s COMPRION has just announced that it is taking the lead for the GSMA’s Handset Testbook activities. It’s where COMPRION has placed the emphasis that is important. In the testing company’s own words, “NFC is on everyone’s lips.” So, out of all the technologies which are crucial to the cellular industry right now, the Paderborn, Germany based company picked NFC. Incidentally, COMPRION called the GSMA – the Groupe Spéciale Mobile Association. Tee-hee. They’ve rebranded to Global System for Mobile as far as GoMo knows.
Anyway, COMPRION goes on to say … “Terminal and card vendors, network operators, financial institutions, and many others have been discussing the benefits and limits of contactless communication for quite some time.”
“The number of people who have to contribute something to the topic of NFC seems to be growing almost every day.”
This is the most significant bit …. “Experience has shown that new lucrative technologies attract many new players. Consequently, rules are indispensable.”
And, who better to help draft those rules than COMPRION, obviously?
COMPRION will help the GSMA’s TSG (Terminal Steering Group) which is putting a lot emphasis on version 2.0 of its standard which is expected in January 2014.
This version shall form the basis for the integration into the GCF (Global Certification Forum), apparently.
It is extremely unlikely to happen, but if the GSMA made NFC an integral part of the GSM standards, GSM operators might be forced to shun Apple.
Not an ideal scenario for our Californian friends.
Incidentally, if you are wondering who COMPRION is, then the company is a global leader in standards testing equipment for smartcard interfaces.
COMPRION develops, manufactures and markets test and measurement equipment for smartcard vendors, smartcard issuers and terminal manufacturers.
The ideal folks for the NFC job, naturally.
*Footnote. Regular readers will be ware, of course, that the GSMA organises the world’s leading cellular conference and exhibition – the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona.
