ComScore’s figures for US show Apple and RIM doing well

Rating: Symbian not to popular in North America

In the USA, ComScore has just finished calculating how the top smartphones fared by market share in October. This info relates only to the USA where Symbian is relatively weak, however. Android doesn’t come out of it too well, either,
This research seems to be something of a scoop for Fierce Wireless
here given that there’s no press release about it on the ComScore web site.

The research concludes that RIM is by far in the lead with Apple coming second. It also shows Symbian and Windows Mobile appearing to be stagnating.

Android doesn’t seem to have grabbed much market share which is curious. Apparently, the Palm Pre’s webOS is not listed because “the device does not yet have a large enough installed base to accurately be counted by ComScore’s survey.”

According to ComScore’s numbers, the publication says, around 36 million Americans own a smartphone, while around 196 million only own a featurephone.

The article rather amusingly refers to these as “non-smartphones” or a device that does not feature an open operating system. Windows Mobile is open, is it? Hmmm.

Of course older readers will remember that ComScore swallowed one of GoMo’s favourite analysts – M:Metrics. So we already know that “ComScore asked respondents what type of phone they own and derived operating system information based on those responses.”
