Comverse has received the highest possible rating for Business Support System (BSS) vendors, from industry analyst firm Gartner. Comverse was rated for providing billing and customer management services to telecom carriers.
Gartner evaluated 12 BSS vendors in total. and provided an overall insight into the current BSS market.
Key findings from Gartner report:
- Although recent years have brought consolidation, the BSS market remains fragmented.
- Leading telecom carriers tend to source their core BSSs from a handful of independent software vendors and system integrators. There are still dozens of suppliers that cater to smaller carriers or supply add-on solutions to leading carriers.
- The survival of many BSS vendors still looks doubtful. Only the leaders make a net profit, which leaves the door open to mergers and acquisitions in the near future.
- Many BSS vendors lack a clearly defined sales strategy. They often focus on direct sales at the expense of channel relationships, which reduces their chance to expand by winning new customers.

What we think?
Reliable billing is a tricky business in the mobile web. As Gartner has pointed out, there are a large number of companies out there who provide these services, but only a small number covering the main carriers. That leaves a lot of smaller companies covering off-deck providers.
